English Language Fellow Program is currently accepting new applications for teaching in 120 countries…

Overview:
The EL Fellow Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) within the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), Office of English Language Programs, and is administered by the Center for Intercultural Education and Development (CIED) at Georgetown University, Washington, DC.

The English Language (EL) Fellow Program promotes English language learning around the world and fosters mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries. It places talented, highly qualified U.S. educators with Master’s degrees with a focus in TEFL/TESL or Applied Linguistics in all regions of the world. Through U.S. embassy projects, EL Fellows share their expertise, hone their skills, gain international experience, and learn other cultures. Upon returning to the United States, they share their experiences and acquired knowledge with their communities and professional colleagues. Today, the EL Fellow Program is more vital than ever. As a premier, competitive opportunity to work on TESL/TEFL projects in developing countries, the EL Fellow Program has an impact not only on the institutions that host EL Fellows, but also within the wider academic community. Teachers at the host institution receive professional tools from the EL Fellow that promote educational effectiveness and expand their ability to provide English instruction for a wider variety of student populations in a larger number of educational contexts.

How To Become A Fellow:
1. Review eligibility requirements here.

2. Prospective Applicants should take a moment to look over the website and make sure the EL Fellow Program meets their needs. The Prospective Fellow Tab provides information on the benefits, living conditions, and what Fellows do in the field. Prospective Applicants are also encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Time Line and FAQ tabs.

If the Prospective Applicant meets the minimum eligibility requirements and would like to apply to the EL Fellow Program then review the application instructions here to learn what information will be required.

3. Apply here. Applicants can sign back into their application to complete or update at any time and should be sure to make note of their username and password.

4. Once the application is complete the Georgetown Program Management team and the Regional Recruitment Centers will screen and process it starting in January. Qualified applicants are entered into the EL Fellow candidate database and interviews are arranged. Applicants who apply before January may not hear from Georgetown until the screening process begins, but are encouraged to contact Georgetown with any questions that arise.

5.After a candidate has been interviewed their application will be forwarded to the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) for final review. All steps in the review process will determine whether an application will be placed in the pool of available candidates.

6.Applications completed and received by February 1, 2013 receive priority consideration for regular cycle 2013-2014 academic year (which, for most projects, is September 2013 through June 2014). Applications completed and received AFTER June 1, 2013, may also be considered for the 2013-2014 academic year, depending upon project availability.

7. Beginning in April, Georgetown draws upon the pool of qualified applicants to identify finalist candidates for specific U.S. Embassy-sponsored EL Fellow projects. Georgetown presents a roster of candidates for each EL Fellow project to the U.S. Department of State Office of English Language Programs and to the appropriate U.S. Embassy. Each roster is compiled based on the needs of the specific project, the applicant’s skills and experience, and the applicant’s Regional Preferences. Candidates are notified when they are placed on a roster and have the option to decline consideration for a particular project and are then returned to the applicant pool.

8.The candidate selected will be notified via email and will have two business days to respond. If the candidate accepts the project the acceptance will be considered conditional until s/he submits a health verification form (HVF) and receives medical clearance by a Medical Reviewer, contracted by the EL Fellow Program. The HVF will be sent to applicants earlier in the selection process. If the HVF is not cleared the candidate will be notified and the Fellowship offer rescinded. At the same time the other candidates in consideration will be notified that they were not selected. If the selected candidate declines the project s/he will be placed back in the applicant pool.
