Position Description:
The International English Center (IEC), a department within the Division of Continuing Education and Professional Studies (CEPS) invites applications for a full-time Director. The Director of the International English Center reports to the Executive Director of the Division of Continuing Education and Professional Studies. The IEC Director is responsible for planning, coordination, and administration of the IEC including supervision and management of faculty and staff in accordance with the policies and procedures of the University of Colorado Boulder campus and the Division of Continuing Education and Professional Studies. The IEC is a self-supporting program within CE and serves approximately 250+ students each 8-week session.
The IEC Director is a senior level position responsible for the administration and management of the IEC, including providing leadership and supervision of faculty and staff; budget planning and control; facilities management; adherence to immigration regulations; promotional activities including marketing and student recruitment; and personnel/program evaluation in accordance with state/university requirements. The Director must have a strong commitment to the values of a research university and matriculating international students from the IEC into undergraduate and graduate degree programs at CU Boulder.
Job Responsibilities:
40% Managerial and Administrative
· Provides leadership in the coordination, development, administration and assessment of IEC programs
· Establishes key working relationships with appropriate internal and external campus and community groups including Continuing Education, CU-Boulder administration, the Linguistics Department, College of Arts and Sciences and other key partners
· Provides leadership, supervision, assessment for assigned staff and faculty
· Develops and manages the IEC budget, preparing forecasts and revenue and expense reports for the yearly budget process
· Oversees recruitment, supervision and evaluation of faculty
· Oversees facility planning and usage
40% Programmatic
· Coordinates the activities of the IEC with appropriate University and CEPS agencies and offices (e.g. records, registration, bursar, etc.) including offices related to international student recruitment, retention, success and services.
· Maintains strong working relationships with the Chair and faculty of the Department of Linguistics.
· Represents the IEC and CEPS on Campus and on University-wide workgroups and committees relating to international student recruitment, retention and success.
· Represents the IEC and CEPS to appropriate professional organizations related to areas of responsibility.
10% Marketing & Student Recruitment
· Markets and promotes IEC programs and services in collaboration with CEPS via print materials, catalogs, the Internet and other means as appropriate.
· Oversees recruitment of a diverse student body for the IEC
10% Other Duties as Assigned
Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or the Dean of Continuing Education/Associate Vice Chancellor for Summer Session
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of five years full-time direct and progressive experience in management/administration of an intensive English program or ESL program at a four-year college or university
Demonstrated experience of successful intensive English learning program growth and development
Master’s Degree in TEFL/TESL, linguistics, applied linguistics, or other field relevant to the position
Demonstrated current knowledge and professional activity in TEFL/TESL
Strong written communication skills
Experience initiating and maintaining relationships with an international community including business and academic constituencies
Demonstrated experience working with “conditional admission” programs and in “pathways” programs to matriculate ESL students into on-campus degree programs.
Required Competencies:
Ability to represent the university in a professional manner with tact and diplomacy
Strong oral communication skills
Strong service orientation to a diverse student population
Desired Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in a related field
• ESL teaching experience
• Senior level experience as an ESL administrator at a research university
• Experience with the uses of technology in education
• Experience with the principles and practices of instructional design
• Skills and experience in strategic planning
• Skills and experience in program development and marketing
• Familiarity with F-1 and J-1 (or equivalent) regulations
