Job Position: Teaching English via VoIP
Job Details:
Wanted: Experienced teachers of English as a foreign language to teach remote lessons using VoIP
Employer:
FrontierLink, an established business education company in Japan seeks to hire experienced English teachers in order to expand its course offerings. The company’s current focus is teaching IT skills to Japanese professionals, and it is now preparing to add English instruction to its curriculum.
Lessons:
The classes will be one-on-one English conversation lessons, focused on teaching business English, including TOEIC preparation, to Japanese professionals. Lessons are one hour long, and will be taught using Skype or other VoIP software to communicate with the student located in Japan. Ideally the teacher will leverage the capabilities of that platform, for instance by sharing screens, using text chat to show spelling of new vocabulary, etc. Students will have a range of English abilities, from beginner to advanced.
Terms and Procedures:
Employment status: Instructors will be independent contractors, paid on an hourly basis.
Lesson volume: This is a new line of business, and we anticipate relatively small numbers of students / lessons initially. As our student base grows, instructors will have the opportunity to take more lessons.
Scheduling and time zones: We will offer lessons from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Japan time, which is 2 p.m. to 6 a.m. Pacific. We are actively seeking instructors in the US, Japan, and other locations in order to best cover this time span.
Scheduling logistics: We will use a flexible system, in which each student’s lessons are not necessarily at a fixed time/day. Using an online scheduling tool, instructors will be able to indicate the times they are available, and students will be able to schedule lessons at their convenience
Texts and curriculum: We are currently developing proprietary texts and curriculum. The intent is to cut lesson preparation time and ensure that students receive a seamless experience even if working with multiple instructors.
Professional Requirements:
Experience teaching English as a foreign language, ideally in a one-on-one setting.
Knowledge of business English used in a professional setting.
Speak English with a neutral North American accent.
A TESOL degree / certificate or similar certification is a plus but not required.
Knowledge of Japanese is a plus but not required; we expect lessons will be conducted in English.
Technical Requirements:
Teachers must have a broadband Internet connection that can support VoIP, a computer capable of running Skype, and an Internet headset, as well as a quiet location in which to teach.
Webcams are a plus, but not required: use of video during lessons is optional, based on the students and teachers’ preferences.
