Job Position: Researcher/Assistant Correspondent at Chunichi Newspapers (London)
Job Details:
The Tokyo Chunichi Newspapers’ London Bureau is looking to recruit a Researcher/Assistant Correspondent to assist the Japanese Correspondents in sourcing news and preparing articles. Working in a team, consisting of two Correspondents and two Assistant Correspondents, you will research current affairs topics, go to press conferences, conduct interviews and handle office administration.
The London Bureau covers political, economic and cultural news from the UK, Northern Europe, European institutions and Sub-Saharan Africa.
The newspaper is published twice a day in Japan in Japanese, with a total circulation of over 4 million. Although you will mainly work during office hours, you will occasionally be asked to work extra hours or to travel abroad. Candidates should note that this is not a writing position.
Responsibilities:
– Keep abreast of current affairs;
– Attend press conferences, international meetings, lectures and briefings;
– Conduct interviews;
– Assist with the planning of and participate in business trips around Europe;
– Assist Japanese correspondents with any language difficulties they may have and help them to handle the administration of moving to a new country;
– Manage all phone communication and office administration;
– Occasionally translate published articles from Japanese into English.
Essential Requirements:
– Demonstrable interest in current affairs;
– Fluency in English, proficiency in Japanese and an affinity for Japan;
– Proactive approach to suggesting article ideas;
– Strong communication skills;
– Strong organisational skills.
Desirable Skills:
– Working knowledge of French.
