East-West Center is happy to announce the following opportunities for study and scholarships for the 2014 Academic Year:

OPPORTUNITIES FOR EWC AFFILIATION

EAST-WEST CENTER STUDENT AFFILIATE PROGRAM
Type of study: An opportunity for graduate students to participate in the residential, educational, leadership development and cultural programs at the East-West Center while pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Hawai’i.
Eligibility: Full-time graduate student status at the University of Hawai’i, or participation in a UH graduate exchange program; Open to students from all countries
Provisions: Discounted housing rate in EWC residence halls; Eligible for competitive EWC field study/travel grant awards
Application deadlines: November 1 for Spring 2014 start; April 4 and June 2 for Fall 2014 start.

EAST-WEST CENTER AFFILIATE SCHOLAR PROGRAM
Type of study: An opportunity for graduate students from universities around the world to have a short-term affiliation with the Center while working on research for a thesis or dissertation related to the Asia Pacific region, and to participate in the Center’s residential and educational programs.
Eligibility: Graduate students from universities world-wide
Application deadline: Received year-round

Education Opportunity: Scholarship for Teacher Training (via, pnwjetaa) 03.22.12

Program Overview:
An intensive training program in teaching Chinese or Japanese will be held this summer (2012) at Portland State University in Oregon. The Chinese & Japanese Teacher Training Institute is an intensive course for current language teachers or those who plan to enter the field. The program provides the foundation for future instructors to teach their language and gives substantial tools to current teachers to reinforce and strengthen their programs. It is a hands-on course, and effective methodology in teaching Chinese and Japanese to North Americans is emphasized over a theoretical analysis of the language. Read More

Boren Awards for International Language Study

Stephanie Boegeman (ALT, Akita-ken, 2006-09) gets her kicks from finding fun crazy ways to see the world and getting paid to do it. She is constantly in search of job, internship, and travel ideas to add to her site Playing With Hire, in the hopes that more JET alumni and like-minded souls join her in her quest to find creative, inspiring, and unique ways to make ends meet.

Still honing your Japanese skills and looking for someone to subsidize your studies? American students who fit this description may want to look into the Boren award.
