Thank you to our friends at the American Association of Teachers of Japanese for this Job Posting.

The School of Language and Literature (SLL) at the University of Central Arkansas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Japanese to start in August 2024.

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • completion of the Ph.D. in Japanese or related field no later than Aug. 1, 2024.
  • one year of successful Japanese language teaching experience at the university level.
  • specialization in Japanese literatures and/or film.

Ideal candidates will be:

  • Possessed of significant, successful teaching experience in Japanese language.
  • Possessed of significant, successful experience teaching Japanese literature and/or film in translation.
  • Pursuing a scholarly agenda in Japanese literary and/or film studies.

SLL at UCA houses degree programs in Chinese, English, French, linguistics, Spanish, and TESOL. SLL is home, too, to more than 400 majors or minors. Currently, SLL offers introductory and intermediate undergraduate courses in Japanese language and culture. We also home a thriving Japanese Club for undergraduates. We hope that this hire positions SLL to expand its Japanese offerings into a minor in the near term and a major in the longer term. Likewise, we hope that the hire positions SLL to better support UCA’s strong interdisciplinary minor in Asian Studies.

Application Process: Interested candidates should apply at http://jobs.uca.edu. Completed applications must include:

  • a letter of application outlining one’s interest in and qualifications for the position.
  • a CV that lists contact information for three professional references.
  • a professional writing sample in English of 15-20 pages.
  • a teaching portfolio that consists of: (1) a teaching philosophy; (2) a sample syllabus for a beginning or intermediate course in Japanese language; and (3) a sample syllabus for a course in Japanese literature and/or film accessible to English-only speakers.

Address queries to Dr. Alana Reid, Associate Professor of Spanish and chair of the search committee, at areid@uca.edu; or Dr. Ty Hawkins, SLL Director and Associate Professor of English, at thawkins@uca.edu.
