Virginia Tech is seeking an experienced, energetic and forward-looking individual to join a dedicated team as Assistant Director of Global Education for Partnerships and Affiliations.

Virginia Tech’s Global Education Office (GEO) is committed to providing Virginia Tech students the opportunity to develop the intercultural competence, transnational understanding, and leadership skills required to face global challenges. In cooperation with academic, service, and administrative faculty and staff, the GEO provides comprehensive support services for the development, implementation, and coordination of academically sound programs abroad that are accessible to students across all disciplines.

The Assistant Director for Partnerships and Affiliations is charged with helping lead Virginia Tech’s foreign partnership development during a time of significant change and growth in international programs and activities. This individual will play a key role in managing Virginia Tech’s 50+ Student Exchange Agreements and our ISEP activities which, combined, currently represent a yearly exchange of roughly 120 students. The position will have primary responsibility for overseeing partnership activity, evaluating strengths and weaknesses, and identifying potential for development in existing or new collaborations.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will manage the university’s strategic student mobility partnerships with overseas universities and third-party affiliations in accordance with international objectives established in the university’s strategic plan, with responsibilities to include:

  • Assisting colleges in their promotion and recruitment efforts;
  • Advising and preparing students for exchange and direct enrollment opportunities with partners;
  • Coordinating with colleges and departments and the University Registrar for academic advising;
  • Processing inbound and outbound student applications;
  • Overseeing renewal for existing agreements and approving proposed new agreements;
  • Monitoring balance maintenance for each partnership and adjusting recruitment efforts accordingly;
  • Serving as institutional point of contact for partner universities abroad;
  • Maintaining up-to-date information on ISEP and bilateral exchanges on the GEO website;
  • Working with the Assistant Director for Global Safety and Risk Management to craft pre-departure orientation for Virginia Tech students not participating in faculty-led programs;
  • Providing encouragement, support, and guidance for colleges and departments to grow existing strategic relationships into multilayered collaborations that include such opportunities as experiential learning, individual or group research, faculty and/or staff exchange, summer study abroad, etc.; and
  • Identifying new partners with high potential in multiple areas

This position requires an ability to organize information effectively, carry forward multiple contemporaneous projects successfully, communicate well with diverse audiences and think independently while consistently maintaining awareness of the larger context and responding to the university’s overarching priorities. Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in an area pertinent to international education or equivalent combination of degree and experience.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in international education including managing bilateral exchanges.
  • Experience living or working abroad.
  • Evidence of care and consistent attention to detail.
  • Experience working with individuals of diverse backgrounds and levels of authority.
  • Experience either advising students or planning pre-departure orientation for study abroad, or both.
  • Knowledge of enrollment management software for study abroad.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in at least one foreign language.
  • Significant experience in the field.
  • Extensive experience managing bilateral partnerships.
  • Experience working with the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP).
  • Working knowledge of StudioAbroad.
  • Evidence of increasing responsibility over the arc of previous positions.
