Job Description:

Hostelling International Chicago seeks a full time Education Coordinator to deliver the hostel’s well-recognized, award-winning cultural awareness building educational programs.

HI-Chicago’s Education Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of ensuring the successful implementation of a variety of educational programs to youth in the local community. HI-Chicago’s educational programs are based on experiential learning, occur both in and outside of the classroom, and are dependent on partnerships with teachers and community based organization leaders. The purpose of the hostel’s educational programs is to build a new generation of global citizens.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain program partner relationships with schools, administrators, community-based organizations, and educational organizations.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, evaluate and retain teachers at partner schools and community-based organizations.
  • Teach the first classroom session of each program at partner schools and community-based organizations in coordination with partner teachers, and deliver programming at the hostel.
  • Coordinate program participation by teachers and their students, including scheduling, and working with hostel staff to book overnights and meeting rooms.
  • Assess and evaluate program outcomes against established objectives. Complete an annual report analyzing program performance.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, evaluate and retain high impact volunteers to deliver evening sessions at hostel, as well as education interns.
  • Invoice program participants and maintain accurate records of program fees and accounts.
  • Maintain accurate records of expenditures, activities, program participant numbers, contacts, partnerships, billing, and media coverage. Attend staff meetings and regular meetings with supervisor. Report monthly and as requested to supervisor.
  • Support fundraising, including special events, grant writing and reporting, and managing donor  relationships.
  • Support program marketing efforts, including media outreach and social media presence.
  • Represent HI-Chicago at national, regional, and local outreach and networking events. As  requested, work in collaboration with education staff and volunteers at other HI-USA locations.
  • Evening hours required depending on time of year and program delivery schedule. Limited travel outside metropolitan Chicago, anticipated once or twice per year.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required.
  • Significant experience in nonprofit educational program delivery and/or traditional school-based teaching, especially with grades 7 through 12.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills.
  • Educational program development, evaluation, and management experience.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Community outreach experience, especially partnership development.
  • Outstanding ability to engage and motivate youth to be open to new ideas and experiences.
  • Strong interest in promoting intercultural understanding.
  • Strong intercultural communication skills.
  • Experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds as reflected in the Chicago community, preferred.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required.
  • Ability to write and speak a foreign language, particularly Spanish, is a plus.
  • Experience with travel, especially utilizing hostels.
  • Background check required.

HI-Chicago Education Coordinator position is funded through June 2013, and continuation beyond that time will be evaluated as part of the organizational education strategy and budgeting process.
