Job: Garden Instructor at the Redwood Heights Parent Fund Assoc. (Oakland, CA)

Position: Garden Instructor (Independent contractor)
Employer: The Redwood Heights Parent Fund Association
Location:  Redwood Heights Elementary School, Oakland, CA
Salary: $16 hr. 15-20 hrs. per week for the 2009-10 school year.
(No benefits, must have TB test and fingerprinting completed.  Currently we have funding for approximately 40 weeks to be spread throughout the school year.)
Starting date:  As soon as possible (school starts 8/31/09)

Position Details:
The Garden Instructor will be an integral part of the students’ and teachers time in the Redwood Heights outdoor classroom. Weekly, standards based garden curriculum will be designed and implemented with teacher oversight. The instructor will help to instill a sense of teamwork, responsibility, organization and overall care for the garden area with groups of students. The Garden Instructor supervises general care and maintenance of the Outdoor Classroom, communicates with teaching staff throughout the year and with the principal and Garden & Ecology Committee on a weekly basis.*****

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, create and maintain curriculum projects that are aligned with CA state standards together with the teachers
  •  Maintain garden, compost and irrigation systems
  •  Coordinate the Green Lunch program (composting/recycling during lunch) and promote the composting/recycling program around the school in classrooms and at school functions
  • Monitor use (educate students on use/safety) and care of all garden tools. Make certain that all tools are clean, and in good condition for student use
  • Teach and supervise students
  • Communicate with teaching staff and school Principal
  • Collaborate with Garden & Ecology Committee, parent volunteers, room parent volunteers and community volunteers

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of current organic farming practices including perennials, fruits and vegetables, and native plants.
  • Previous experience in garden environment, environmental education and/or running/coordinating a teaching garden and/or school garden with young children.
  • Previous teaching experience and/or teaching credential.
  • Self starter and motivated to design and implement innovative garden programs.
  • Possess ability to communicate in written and verbal forms.
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Able to work independently and in groups.
  • Experience writing and managing grants a plus.
