PRIMARY FUNCTION/POSITION SUMMARY:
The Junior Specialist is primarily responsible for cataloguing and preparing consigned property for sale.  In addition, this position works closely under the supervision of senior specialist colleagues to develop increased responsibility in the production of appraisals and proposals, increased knowledge of domestic client relationship management, and relevant markets for the art category, and increased negotiating and selling skills.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Duties include but are not limited to the following):

  • Assist with public inquiries on potential property for sale including telephone calls, front counter appointments and photo inquiries.
  • Track photo inquiries, liaising with clients, specialists and the Client Service Center.
  • Answer phones- polite and professional phone manner.
  • Assist in the production of the auction catalogue, liaising with the specialists, warehouse and photo studio teams, including coordinating photography and obtaining copyright permission for comparables.
  • Assist in the production of fine art appraisals, liaising with clients, specialists and Trusts, Estates & Appraisals, vetting/pricing property for House or cross-departmental sales.
  • Coordinate and oversee restoration with external consultants.
  • Help with preparation of advertisements & marketing promotion.
  • Research property including authenticity, bibliography, provenance and exhibition history.
  • Manage client accounts: support business-getting efforts by following up on consignments and appraisals.
  • Catalogue property for public and private sales.
  • Prepare condition reports & additional digital images for clients.
  • Help with pre-sale exhibition setup (ordering stands, cases, organizing objects on view).
  • Assist clients in galleries during sale week.
  • Participate in Telephone Bidding with clients during the auction.
  • Maintain dept library and research material.
  • Send out special interest letters.
  • Accompany department head and/ or other specialists on appraisals and client visits; assist with associated follow-up.
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager.
Japanese Art

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in applicable Art History or Decorative Arts category; M.A preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years paid work experience in related field.
  • Japanese language fluency (spoken and reading) required, proficiency in writing preferred.
  • Knowledge of the auction business.
  • Demonstrated ability in appraising property and business-getting.
  • Knowledge of E-mail, Spreadsheet, Word Processing and Presentation software (Microsoft Office preferred).
  • Ability to learn Christie’s systems including Siebel, Property System, intranet and website.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior written and spoken communication.
  • Superior client service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Strong follow-up skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work within a team environment

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed in an office setting, and off-site in various client settings (private, corporate and institution.)
  • Noise level in the office work environment is moderate, will vary for external locations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent movement throughout multi-building office complex including going to on-site and off-site warehouses as necessary; travel within NYC to meet with clients/ attend exhibitions.
  • Infrequent light physical effort required.
  • Required to handle, inspect and/or take photographs of works of art for appraisal and consignment (up to 40 of lbs of lifting).
  • Required to create written or recorded descriptions of inspected items.
  • Required to attend events, exhibitions, art fairs locally.
  • Required to meet with clients on-site and off-site.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED:
Basic office equipment including personal computer, copy machine, fax machine, scanner; office supplies; digital camera; black light.
