The Rice Cooker Chronicles
The Rice Cooker Chronicles was inspired by Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant, a collection of essays about the pleasures and challenges of cooking for oneself or eating out alone. It’s not hard to see how this fits into the JET experience: sometimes solitary, surrounded by unfamiliar food. How do you buy ingredients when you can’t read labels in the supermarket? Do you try a restaurant even though you don’t have a companion to accompany you? From that prompt, our writers branched out into their relationships with food in Japan.
We welcome more essays about how food shaped your time in Japan.
