Contract: Full-Time
Thanks to JET alumnus, Brian Hsieh (Nagasaki-ken, 2017-2019) for passing along the following opening where he works. Unfortunately, visa sponsorship is not available.
The Japanese American Museum of San Jose (JAMsj) is looking for a new Museum Director! An almost entirely volunteer-run museum from 1987, JAMsj is a testament to the passion and dedication of the community of San Jose Japantown to preserving and telling the stories of Japanese Americans and other immigrants. With the museum’s expansion to a spacious, remodeled building in San Jose Japantown in 2010, and the hiring of our first staff member in 2018, we are steadily broadening the scope of our mission as well as extending our reach to new audiences.
With growth comes opportunity, and so we’re looking for a new Museum Director to help lead the charge in furthering JAMsj’s mission. The ideal director will be a person with demonstrated experience growing a small non-profit or museum, securing donations, grants or other funds, and curating museum exhibits. As JAMsj is mostly volunteer-run with a small number of staff, the Director will also need to be flexible and well-versed with the needs of a small organization.
As the Museum Director, you will get to:
- Give back to a rich, tight-knit community.
- Improve organizational structure as the museum shifts to hiring more staff.
- Have creative freedom to curate new exhibits or hold fun educational events.
- Develop partnerships and secure funds to ensure financial stability.
- Strengthen the museum’s branding to reach a broader audience.
- And so much more!
Application Process: If you’re an individual who cares deeply about advancing cultural initiatives and spreading awareness of the history of immigrant groups, we encourage you to apply on our official website here. For any inquiries, please contact our Hiring Coordinator, Brian Hsieh at hiringcoordinator@jamsj.org. Direct experience working in a museum is greatly preferred, but if you have relevant experiences or are moved by our mission, we encourage you to apply!
