Participate in the JET Arigato Campaign
Have you had exciting and unique experiences, met interesting people, and made new discoveries while on the JET Programme?
This year, 2016, marks the 30th Anniversary of the JET Programme. Over 60,000 people have participated in the programme in the past 30 years, and many of them have formed life-long bonds with Japan and the local communities they lived in, and, most importantly, made unforgettable memories.
With the JET Arigato Campaign CLAIR would like to provide a space for everyone involved in the JET Programme, be it current JET participants, JET alumni, or Japanese people that have connections with the JET Programme, to express their ‘thank you’ to the people they have grown close to because of the Programme or to the Programme itself.
It is our hope that, through the sharing of these arigato messages, JET Programme participants will be able to strengthen bonds of friendship and community with each other and members of the Japanese community, as well as to build excitement for the celebration of the Programme’s 30th Anniversary. We greatly appreciate your cooperation in informing your fellow JET alumni and friends in the community of this campaign, and we look forward to your submissions.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan is searching for a Temporary External Affairs Manager for U.S. Government Affairs (EAM USG) who will support the ACCJ in handling matters related to the U.S. Government (USG) for the ACCJ for a 3-4 month period between July-October 2016.
Responsibility:
- USG Relations (information exchange, meetings, Washington, D.C. Doorknock-related briefings, USG Briefings, Embassy Liaison Program, etc.)
- Gatekeeper for engagement with US Government
- Administration of the Advocacy Review Process (for any policy positions taken or official public statements made by the ACCJ)
Specific Areas of Responsibility Include:
- Provide information, analysis and advice to ACCJ members on Chamber advocacy generally, USG policies and activities that affect their business interests in Japan;
- Identify opportunities for ACCJ input into USG activities, such as Congressional hearings, public comment and other written or personal testimony;
- Ensure the effectiveness of the “influence” segment of ACCJ activities, recognized as one of the three primary membership benefits, in the following ways, among others;
- Facilitate the communication and incorporation of ACCJ views into USG policy toward Japan;
- Help refine the expression of ACCJ policy views through the Advocacy Review Process;
- Organize and manage meetings, lunches and other events that will facilitate communications between ACCJ leaders and USG representatives;
- Provide input and advice to the Executive Director, other members of the staff (as necessary) and of the Chamber, regarding their engagement as representatives of the ACCJ with government officials and other key stakeholders.
Other:
- The preferred candidate is a native-English speaker with excellent English writing abilities. Business Japanese language ability is preferred.
- The EAM USG uses the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and FileMaker Pro on a daily basis.
- Masters degree preferred.

Next month, New York Japan CineFest returns to Asia Society for two nights of short films by emerging Japanese and Japanese American filmmakers, highlighting some of the most exciting new voices in cinema today.
This annual festival was originally founded by two filmmakers, Yasu Suzuki and Kosuke Furukawa, and event producer Hiroshi Kono of Mar Creation, Inc. It debuted in 2012, and this year’s event is presented by Mar Creation and Citi Series on Asian Arts and Culture, offering 13 short films ranging from five to 40 minutes each. While there are no official categories for New York Japan CineFest, genres include drama, comedy, documentary, animation, and stop-motion animation.
Standouts include TOKYO COSMO, an anime study on loneliness; Fall Seven Times, Get Up Eight: The Japanese War Brides, a real-life story about a trio of women who left Japan in the 1950s to start a new life in America; and Keino, a documentary about the eponymous custom motorcycle builder of Brooklyn’s Keino Cycles.
All of this year’s films were originally released in the last two years. Many are debuting for the first time in New York, and a reception sponsored in part by Kirin Brewery of America will follow the first night’s screenings.

As summer approaches the JET Program Office is preparing to send out another group of new JET Program participants to Japan. Some of our new participants have little or no experience with studying Japanese and in order to help them acclimate to life in Japan, the JET Program Office offers a short crash course on survival Japanese.
For this purpose, the JET Program Office is seeking a teacher for the Japanese for Beginners course for new JET Program participants.
The course will meet four times, once a week after work for four weeks in late June/early July (exact dates TBD). It will take place at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, DC. New JET participants may attend any or all of the class meetings, and the typical class size is 5-10 participants. The JET Program Office will manage registration of students, providing the classroom and necessary materials (e.g. white board, photocopies of handouts, etc.), and in-class support if the teacher needs assistance.
The teacher will be expected to design the lesson plan for the four classes and carry out the primary role of teaching the JET participants who attend the class. The teacher should:
- be proficient in the Japanese language.
- have experience teaching/tutoring, particularly if that experience is teaching Japanese.
- be prepared to design the lesson plans and materials for the four classes.
- have experience with or knowledge of the JET Program and life in Japan.
