“Challenges of Banking in an Economic Crisis”

The Japan-America Society is pleased to announce Mr. Masamichi “Mitch” Yasuda as our featured speaker for a September 25 lunch program titled “Challenges of Banking in an Economic Crisis.” Mr. Yasuda will speak about the state of the economy in Japan today compared to its post-bubble years, and the economic challenges facing U.S. bankers. He will also touch on how Union Bank has been able to stay successful during these difficult economic times.
Mitch Yasuda is a senior executive vice president of Union Bank N.A. He was named to his position in 2009. Mr. Yasuda provides oversight to the bank’s finance division, and has executive responsibility for business development outreach to Japanese companies operating in the U.S. He also oversees the bank’s Liaison Affairs division, which works in partnership with Union Bank’s management and The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd. (BTMU), Union Bank’s parent company. Mr. Yasuda is a member of the bank’s executive management committee and the CEO Forum. He has extensive international experiences, which include assignments in New York and London. Prior to joining Union Bank in June this year, Mr. Yasuda was general manager and treasurer of the Global Markets Division for the Americas at BTMU in New York. He joined The Bank of Tokyo, Ltd., a predecessor of BTMU, in 1983. A native of Kobe, Japan, Mr. Yasuda holds a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Hitotsubashi.
Union Bank legally changed its name from Union Bank of California to Union Bank in December, 2008, and introduced a new logo and related branding treatments on July 1, 2009. It is California’s fifth-largest bank by deposits, and it has 335 banking offices in California, Oregon, and Washington and two international offices.
