Justin’s Japan: ‘Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon’ Makes Broadway Debut

By JQ magazine editor Justin Tedaldi (CIR Kobe-shi, 2001-02) for Shukan NY Seikatsu. Justin has written about Japanese arts and entertainment for JETAA since 2005. For more of his articles, click here.

On March 29-30, “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon the Super Live” premiered with three sold-out performances at the PlayStation Theater. This dazzling musical adaptation of the megahit anime and manga franchise, which has generated $5 billion in merchandise sales to date, featured a talented all-female cast (including for the male roles) performing in Japanese.

“At its core, ‘Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon’ is about strong girlfriends banding together to fight for what they believe in…they are the ultimate example of ‘girl power,’” said show producer Takaharu Uera. This universal theme was reflected in the wide diversity of the audience, who were overjoyed to see their heroines come to life.

Innovatively directed and choreographed by TAKAHIRO (Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet Tour) with book by Akiko Kodama (Takarazuka Revue Company) and music by HYADAIN (pop groups Momoiro Clover Z and AKB48), these performances also marked the first time a 2.5D musical, a genre based on popular contemporary Japanese properties like manga, anime and video games, was performed on a New York stage.

First published by creator Naoko Takeuchi in 1991, the manga is now localized in more than 14 countries and released as an anime in more than 50 countries around the world, according to Naho Yamada, general manager of Kodansha USA Publishing, which ran a packed pop-up store at the theater displaying the newest volume of the “Sailor Moon Eternal Edition” collection and other exclusive goods that had thousands of fans eagerly lining up before and after the shows.

“We are happy that fans of all ages have the opportunity to experience ‘Sailor Moon’ in new ways, and that it continues to be a worldwide phenomenon,” said Yamada.

Japan Society, 333 East 47th Street

Loosely based on the 15th-century noh play Nonomiya, it explores erotic entanglement, unresolved attachments and the search for harmony, all of which are hallmarks of noh drama. Set to live music by Reiko Yamada and Yuki Isami, the show embraces new technologies created by MIT Media Lab designers. The lead role, by Armitage’s longtime collaborator Megumi Eda, highlights sinuous, seductive movement executed with ferocious intensity in a dream-like state. The April 12 performance is followed by a MetLife Meet-the-Artists Reception, and the April 13, performance is followed by an artist Q&A.

Time:       19:30 – 22:00

The Fukushima Youth Sinfonietta is one of the most positive things to emerge from the devastation of the 11th of March, 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in north-eastern Japan.

The young musicians of this extraordinary orchestra are thrilled to return to London for a performance full of emotional intensity, with a programme including Tchaikovsky’s captivating Fifth Symphony.

The Fukushima Youth Sinfonetta has become a beacon of hope for a region devastated by loss, personal pain and suffering. Set up by UK charity Keys of Change in partnership with schools in Fukushima, initially to bring hope to the young people of the area, the orchestra has made rapid musical strides and has already performed in the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, Tokyo Opera City, and Boston Symphony Hall, where the determination of the young people to create something truly excellent in the face of all kinds of adversity has had the power to inspire other young people and adults.

“Only music gave me courage and strength when I changed schools from my hometown, Minami Soma, because of the radiation. I feel very nervous to play again in such a prestigious hall, but I would like to do my best to convey my appreciation to music. I have been practicing hard with all my friends, aiming to become a symbol of restoration of Fukushima. I wish the London audience will share our excitement.”

    1. Shogi and Dobutsu Shogi (Let’s catch the lion!) Workshop with the Japan Foundation

Shogi is a traditional Japanese board game, similar to Western Chess. Played by two players, the different ways in which the pieces can move arguably makes Shogi strategy more interesting and exciting to play through to the end. However, the downside of Shogi is that it takes some time to master …

In order to encourage those who have always wanted to play Shogi but didn’t know where to start, Sydney Shogi Club has invited Madoka Kitao, one of Japan’s most distinguished Shogi players to teach you ‘Dobutsu Shogi’ (‘Animal Shogi’), a simplified version of Shogi, invented by Kitao herself.

Having much less pieces on the board, Dobutsu Shogi may seem an easy game at first, but once you experience it, you will soon be drawn into the dazzling labyrinthine world of Shogi.

The game is suitable for all ages and even those who consider themselves a Shogi master will also be fascinated to play this wild variation!

At the beginning of workshop, Madoka Kitao will also talk about the culture and history of Shogi in Japan. Come and enjoy Dobutsu Shogi and meet the master and inventor of this cute board game!

WIT Life #334: Hikikomori shifting demographics

Written by professional Writer/Interpreter/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03), WIT Life is a periodic series about aspects of Japanese culture such as film, food and language. Stacy starts her day by watching Fujisankei’s newscast in Japanese, and here she shares some interesting tidbits and trends along with her own observations.

The plight of Japan’s hikikomori (ひきこもり or voluntary shut-ins), has always been a topic that received a lot of buzz, but has primarily focused on young people affected by this phenomenon.  However, according to a recent nationwide survey carried out by the Cabinet Office that was the first of its kind, recent trends indicate that it is actually older people who now comprise a larger percentage of Japan’s hikikomori population (gender-wise, men still comprise the majority of hikikikomori at a rate of around 3:1).

This BBC article characterized hikikomori as “modern-day hermits,” and describes how this condition is not only limited to Japan, but also seen in other Asian and European countries.  In fact, the problem of loneliness and social isolation got so bad in the UK that it appointed its first designated minister for loneliness last year.  Here in the States, loneliness has various deleterious effects, which have become Read More

JET Alum, Andy Shartzer releases Parody of Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” Dubbed “Small Charcoal Grill / Shichirin”

JET Alum Releases a Parody of Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” Dubbed “Small Charcoal Grill / Shichirin”
As you may or may not know, in January 2019 Ariana Grande found her new tattoo the center of controversy when what she thought said “7 Rings” in Japanese actually said shichirin which means “small charcoal grill.”

A recent JET alum, Andy Shartzer (Shizuoka, 2014-2016), and his sketch group Overstep Comedy, made a tribute to the art of Japanese BBQ, “Small Charcoal Grill / Shichirin” — written by and starring Andy Shartzer, directed by Jatin Chhugani, and produced by Otter Lee and Helen Shih. In the original song, Ariana shows her love and appreciation for her friends by buying them expensive gifts. In this parody, “Andiana Grande” shows his love for his boys with expensive, delicious morsels of meat. While the video is a parody of Ari’s tattoo fail, it is also an homage to her aesthetic of the original “7 Rings” and a tribute to the art of Japanese BBQ.

Overstep Comedy is an Asian-American comedy group in NYC dedicated to increasing representation and kicking ass!

The Tale of Genji: A Japanese Classic Illuminated

Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue

$12-$25

This is the first major loan exhibition in North America to focus on the artistic tradition inspired by Japan’s most celebrated work of literature, The Tale of Genji. Written by Murasaki Shikibu, a lady-in-waiting in the early eleventh-century imperial court, and often referred to as the world’s first psychological novel, the tale recounts the amorous escapades of the “Shining Prince” Genji and introduces some of the most iconic female characters in the history of Japanese literature. Covering the period from the eleventh century to the present, the exhibition features more than 120 works, including paintings, calligraphy, silk robes, lacquer wedding set items, a palanquin for the shogun’s bride, and popular art such as ukiyo-e prints and modern manga. Highlights include two National Treasures and several works recognized as Important Cultural Properties. For the first time ever outside Japan, rare works are on view from Ishiyamadera Temple—where, according to legend, Shikibu started writing the tale.
