Job: Program Coordinator at the Consulate-General of Japan (NASHVILLE)

The Consulate-General of Japan in Nashville is looking for a Program Coordinator to help manage JET and other cultural programs like scholarships and exchanges.  The Nashville consulate covers the five state jurisdiction of Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee. The deadline is January 4th.

DUTIES:
• Organizing Japanese cultural programs (i.e. Japanese cultural fairs, school/library visits)
• Promoting Japanese language and Japanese studies education (i.e. Japanese speech contests, seminars on U.S.-Japan relations)
• Assisting with the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program, Japanese Government Scholarship Program and other exchange programs (i.e. recruitment, interview, orientation)
• Website management

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Invested interest in, knowledge of and passion for Japan and U.S.-Japan exchanges
• Understanding of Japanese culture and intercultural communication skills (Conversational Japanese language ability and working experience in a Japanese environment desired)

One of my favorite things about Japan is the constant changing of flavors, often in accordance with the seasons.  I love just wandering through conbini to see what new tastes have popped up for my favorite snacks/drinks.  One product over there I follow religiously is Kit Kats, as you can often get flavors that are not available here in the States.  This is why I was thrilled to receive an omiyage of ginger ale Kit Kats from a friend who had recently traveled to Japan.

Next to the customary phrase, “Have a break, have a Kit Kat” was a glass of ginger ale with lemon in it.  With use of .3% lemon powder and ginger ale flavor, it promised to be something new.  The aroma was Read More

Background: It was a dreadful night on March 24, 2007. Lindsay Hawker was an English teacher at Nova, a well known language school in Japan. She had met Tatsuya Ichihashi by chance in a café a few days earlier, and that night had agreed to go up to his room. The next day she was found dead in his apartment.

The evidence was overwhelming against Tatsuya Ichihashi. Lindsay’s body had been found in a bathtub on the balcony filled with sand and other materials, which Ichiro had been purchasing from the local hardware store. The taxi cab driver had been told to wait for Lindsay to come back down from Ichiro’s apartment, but she never returned. He also fled the scene…

Job: Enrollment Officer at Council on International Educational Exchange (MAINE)

The CIEE, Council on International Educational Exchange, headquartered in Portland, Maine, is looking for an enrollment manager for their Asia division.  The enrollment officer is in charge of overseeing the application process for students traveling and studying abroad, and knowledge of an Asian language and experience with education abroad are highly preferred in a candidate.

The Enrollment Officer (EO), based in the CIEE Portland office, has primary responsibilities for students between the point of application and the point of departure on the program. Last week I had the opportunity to hear a talk given by the Japanese sociologist Dr. Yuko Kawanishi.  Dr. Kawanishi has written numerous articles and is often quoted by Western media on topics such as declining birth rate, education reform, mental health and depression, family relations, juvenile crime and youth culture.  She did her undergraduate work at Doshisha University and got her PhD in Sociology from UCLA.  Currently she is the recipient of an Abe Fellowship and a visiting scholar at Hunter College and Columbia University’s Teacher’s College.

It was just another day at the Harmon Cove Outlet Center in Secaucus, NJ, on the weekend before Christmas. There had been the typical Christmas events previously at the mall, such as Santa coming to sit with kids, and a magic show. Most stores and shoppers were just getting prepared to have one more day of weekend shopping before the big holiday on Friday of this week. WITvid #6: “The Ride”

WITvid is a periodic series by Peter Weber (Saitama-ken 2004-07), the JET Program Coordinator in San Francisco.

Take a bike “ride” through the holiday streets of Tokyo with JET Alum, CJ Hoppel and his colleague Kevin Jones (joneskc7881).  Both are currently working in Tokyo.

This video was made for a holiday party contest, the theme was “what you like about Tokyo.”  They won two tickets to Okinawa with their subbmission The Ride.
