BACKGROUND

Showa Boston Institute of Language and Culture is a residential academic institution for about 300 students established by Showa Women’s University in Tokyo in 1988. Its mission is to increase students’ English proficiency, to develop their cross-cultural awareness, and to foster their personal growth. The 40-acre campus rests on a hilltop overlooking the Boston skyline. At the heart of the campus are administrative offices, residences, a dining hall, and educational facilities.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Residential Community Coordinator (RCC) resides on campus and supports the Resident Services with a Japanese female student study-abroad program. Acting as mentor, conversation partner, and cultural guide, you will facilitate student engagement, academic support, and cultural immersion. This role includes participation in an emergency on-call rotation.

COMPENSATION: $17.51/hr for 20 hours per week including weekends and evenings.

Included with compensation are room and board for the entirety of the one year contract. Rooms may be single rooms in a residential wing with free parking. The meals are provided when the campus is open. Professional development opportunities based on the candidates’ interest.

START DATE: August 17, 2026 (with move-in date between August 9-16, 2026)

Programming & Community Development (9 hrs/week):

  • Plan and execute diverse events such as social gatherings and educational workshops to enrich student life
  • Collaborate with student organizations and faculty to align events with campus goals and promote interdisciplinary interactions
  • Utilize various communication channels to publicize events and encourage student participation
  • Coordinate with Wing Leaders and the Resident Services Coordinator to develop leadership and community among residents
  • Address residential community issues and promote engagement in wing activities.

Essential Job Functions (9 hrs/week):

  • Support student orientations and community building initiatives within residence halls.
  • Assist in organizing extracurricular activities and off-campus trips.
  • Provide academic and social support through dining and informal interactions.
  • Offer operational assistance to Student Services and respond to residential concerns.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities and emergency responses as needed (2 hrs)
  • Manage the on-call phone and respond to emergency calls from Security
  • Document the time and what transpired during the calls
  • Update supervisor on any major issues or concerns that occur

SKILLS

  • Self-starter while working well in a strong team environment
  • Cultural competency and the ability to communicate effectively in a culturally sensitive manner to support international students
  • Ability to deal tactfully with others and exercise good judgment in appraising situations.
  • Maintain effective and positive working relationships with all staff, teachers, and students

REQUIREMENTS

  • Currently enrolled in Boston area undergraduate or graduate program
  • Must show proof of enrollment
  • Ability to complete a one-year contract with the possibility of renewal
  • Previous leadership experience preferred
  • Experience living within a community environment
  • Ability to live on campus during the entire year of the contract
  • Familiarity with the Boston-area
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications
  • Knowledge and/or experience with the Japanese language and culture preferred
