Position: Assistant Professor in Japanese Studies – Tenure System

Position Summary:

The Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures (LiLaC) seeks a tenure system assistant professor of Japanese minority and/or gender studies. This is a nine-month, academic year position beginning August 16, 2024, with a course load of four courses per academic year. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to teaching and research that foregrounds the diversity of Japanese cultural experiences, particularly those of marginalized and/or underexamined groups in Japan. Potential research foci include but are not restricted to the literary, cultural and/or linguistic practices of resident (Zainichi) Korean, resident Chinese, Okinawan, burakumin and/or the Japanese diaspora.

Other possible topics include those related to gender, disability, or LGBTQI experiences within Japanese contexts. Period of specialization is open, and applications are welcome from candidates with a PhD in Japanese literary studies, cultural studies, linguistics, or a related field.

Housed within LiLaC, the Japanese Studies Program is one of the largest language and culture programs at MSU, and its major and minor programs emphasize a strong balance between cultural and linguistic fluency. The successful candidate will complement these strengths and engage in an active program of teaching (normally, two courses per semester), research and service/outreach. Teaching responsibilities will include a combination of courses within the candidate’s field of expertise, introductory courses in Japanese literature and culture, Japanese language classes, and/or courses in the College of Arts & Letters’ general education program in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Humanities.

Required Degree:

Doctorate

Minimum Requirements:

• PhD in Japanese literary studies, cultural studies, linguistics, or a related field by time of appointment

Desired Qualifications:

• Robust research agenda in Japanese minority and/or gender studies
• 1-2 years experience teaching within their discipline in a North American university setting
• Native or near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English
• Ability to design and teach courses that complement existing faculty and program strengths
• Commitment to and/or evidence of student-centered and innovative teaching practices
• Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in both research and teaching
• For candidates with specializations outside of literature or cultural studies, a strong focus on the intersection of their field and literary or cultural practices is preferred
• Commitment to and/or evidence of service and leadership
• Japanese language teaching experience
