Overview:

Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA is a 501c3 non-profit located in Washington, DC involved in U.S.-Japan relations, providing conferences and seminars, think tank analysis, people-to-people exchanges and coordination of high-level dialogue between the two countries through our in-house and collaborative programs.

Sasakawa USA seeks an experienced Fellow to lead the U.S.-Japan Common Challenges Program. The Common Challenges Program identifies areas in which the United States and Japan can cooperate to further the interests of the two countries, East Asia and the world as a whole. Ongoing projects include U.S.-Japan cooperation in Myanmar, democracy development, and science and technology. Sasakawa USA intends to develop additional new, unique and important programs on other key issues that would benefit from such cooperation bilaterally, regionally and globally. The Fellow develops the overall program on common challenges, conducts research on common challenges for publication by Sasakawa USA, and leads development of a plan for a set of Sasakawa USA programs in the area of common challenges to the United States and Japan. The Fellow will lead the planning and conduct of workshops, conferences and other activities, and will help publicize the results. The Common Challenges Fellow will meet with audiences from the general public as well as members of Congress and the executive branch to educate them on the US-Japan relationship. The Fellow is a member of the quickly growing Programs team led by the Chairman and CEO and Director for Programs.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in relevant field or equivalent service in senior policy position with a focus on Japan and Asia
  • Demonstrated expertise in U.S.-Japan relations, and specialized knowledge or experience in an area of common U.S.-Japan challenges
  • Familiarity with key policymakers in the United States and Japan
  • Previous research and analytical work on policy issues or equivalent engagement in policymaking
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to learn quickly and engage with experts across a variety of subjects
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team
  • Authorization to work in the U.S (without employer sponsorship)

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency in written and oral Japanese
  • Doctorate or equivalent
  • Expertise and publications in one or more fields currently or potentially covered by the Common Challenges Program: Japan, Myanmar, democracy promotion, science and technology, Southeast Asia, China
  • Administrative experience
  • Experience in a think tank, academia or other organization with a research focus
  • Public speaking and other experience speaking to the media, presenting at conferences, testifying before Congress

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain the overall concept, plan and continuing assessment of the Sasakawa USA Common Challenges program
  • Conduct research on common challenges that face the United States and Japan that are receiving inadequate coverage elsewhere, and publish the results in Sasakawa USA’s media or elsewhere
  • Provide expert commentary, write issue briefs and publish in-depth research and analysis on one or more of the key issues included in the current Common Challenges Program
  • Work with outside experts on in-depth research and analysis of key developments in current matters covered by the Common Issues Program
  • Participate and speak at outside programs and events on topics covered under the Common Challenges Program
  • Help develop research projects on critical common issues for the United States and Japan covering the short-, medium- and long-term
  • Review and evaluate research program proposals and documents
  • Provide input in the evaluation of incoming proposals and documents from external organizations
  • Help plan, organize conduct and publicize conferences, roundtables and other events in and outside of Washington, D.C.
  • Work collaboratively with others in the Research Program on broader issues in U.S.-Japan relations
  • Travel to attend project-related conferences and events
  • Provide substantive input and suggestions for participants in the planning of visits to Japan by American scholars and practitioners or visits to the United States by Japanese scholars and practitioners as part of Sasakawa USA’s outreach programs
