Overview:

Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA (SPFUSA) is a 501c3 non-profit located in Washington, DC involved in U.S.-Japan relations, providing conferences and seminars, think tank analysis, people-to-people exchanges and coordination of high-level dialogue between the two countries through our in-house and collaborative programs.

Sasakawa USA seeks an experienced Associate Fellow to help provide substantive and programmatic direction for the U.S.-Japan Common Challenges Program. The Common Challenges Program identifies areas in which the United States and Japan can cooperate to further the interests of both countries, the East Asia region, and globally. Ongoing projects include US-Japan cooperation in Myanmar, democracy development, and science and technology. Sasakawa USA intends to develop additional new, unique and important programs on other key issues that would benefit from such cooperation bilaterally, regionally and globally. The Associate Fellow helps develop the overall program on common challenges, conducts research on common challenges for publication by Sasakawa USA, helps develop a plan for a set of programs in the area of common challenges to the United States and Japan and helps publicize the results. The Associate Fellow will actively participate in events and projects in and outside of Sasakawa USA to provide his/her expertise on these issues. The Fellow is a member of the quickly growing Programs team led by the Chairman and CEO and Director for Programs.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in relevant field (international relations, policy studies, political science, development, law, science and technology ideally with focus on Japan and China or Southeast Asia) or equivalent service in policy position in relevant field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in U.S.-Japan relations and specialized knowledge or experience in an area of common US-Japan challenges (such as, but not limited to: China, Myanmar, Southeast Asia, sci-tech, social issues)
  • Familiarity with policymakers in the United States and Japan
  • Previous research and analytical work on policy issues or equivalent engagement in policymaking
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to learn quickly and engage with experts across a variety of subjects
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team
  • Ability to work independently while diligently reporting progress to a team
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. (without employer sponsorship)

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficiency in written and oral Japanese, JLPT N2 or equivalent preferred
  • Doctorate or equivalent years of experience in a relevant policy position
  • Expertise and publications in one or more fields currently covered by the Common Challenges Program: Japan, Myanmar, democracy promotion, science and technology
  • Experience in organizing events and delegation visits to a foreign country and within the United States
  • Experience working in a think tank, academia, foundation, or other organization with research and programming focus

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and report on key developments in current and potential future areas of focus in Common Challenges program
  • Conduct research on common challenges that face the United States and Japan that are receiving inadequate coverage elsewhere, and publish the results in SPFUSA media or elsewhere
  • Draft project proposals and other documents including policy briefs, op-eds, conference and project reports, and website content
  • Formulate project budgets and track expenditures of funds in coordination with the Administrative Office
  • Evaluate, manage and follow-up on incoming proposals and documents from external organizations
  • Develop, plan and implement conferences, roundtables and other events in and outside of Washington, D.C. and assist in outreach activities related to the Common Challenges Program
  • Communicate and coordinate regularly with staff as well as partners and supporting individuals and organizations in executing projects and events
  • Provide information and website material to the Senior Program Officer and the Outreach Coordinator on projects and related issues as part of SPFUSA’s overall media and outreach efforts
  • Provide administrative and programmatic direction to Program Assistants and interns in the research program
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of key experts and policymakers in U.S.-Japan relations and other fields covered by the Common Challenges program
  • Travel to attend project-related conferences and events
