About The Japan Society:

The Japan Society is the leading body in the United Kingdom dedicated to the enhancement of the British-Japanese relationship in all its facets. With a history stretching back to 1891, its members are committed to promoting deep and lasting understanding between our two countries. The Japan Society has a full programme of events and activities for its members, both individual and corporate, about 50% of whom are Japanese. It also runs an extensive educational programme which complements the business-related, academic and cultural activities and enables us to provide opportunities for young people and adults alike to participate in projects and events across the UK.

The education programme is geared to those teaching and studying about Japan in the UK, particularly in primary and secondary education, with an emphasis on Japanese studies rather than language learning. We have a wide range of loan materials available for schools; provide a comprehensive support service for those wishing to develop links with schools in Japan, including the bilingual ‘Japan UK LIVE!’ website; coordinate visits to schools by Japanese volunteers; organize workshops and develop teaching materials.

The Japan Society has responded to the catastrophic events of the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March, by establishing the Japan Society Tohoku Earthquake Relief Fund, to support the long term recovery. As part of our general educational remit, we shall be reporting on this process to all our constituents, including schools, through the provision of information and teaching resources.
