Part Time Freelance Visual Designer (Web)

We are looking to hire a part time visual designer on a project-based freelance retainer basis to complement our small interdisciplinary team of strategists, designers, and programmers. A more permanent role may be considered as our relationship develops. Telecommuting is a possibility, but you must be able to available to attend meetings in our Union Square office two to three times a week.

Purpose is an international team based in New York that builds cutting-edge social and political movements. Our principals David Madden and Jeremy Heimans co-founded GetUp.org – an Australian online political movement that is now larger than all Australia’s political parties put together and www.avaaz.org/en/, the world’s largest online political community with more than 3.3 million members (a partnership with MoveOn.org).

Purpose is currently advising advocacy groups and progressive companies around the world and is also incubating new issue-based movements. We’re a new, unusual and evolving combination of an agency and a home for political and social entrepreneurship. Most recently we’ve launched http://livestrongaction.org, a movement platform designed to raise awareness around the fight against cancer.

Responsibilities:
-Design the visuals for websites and emails based on campaign objectives and client branding specifications
-Translate wireframes, sketches, and concept documents into smart design solutions and user-centric interactions
-Design prototypes and mock ups to demonstrate proof of concepts
-Visualize data in provocative, easy to understand ways to move users to take action on issues
-Style Powerpoint/Keynote presentations, print documents, and other related collateral as needed
-Work closely with the Purpose team of strategists, designers, and programmers to ensure that designs are delivered effectively and remain true to concept

Requirements:
-Bachelors or equivalent in visual/graphic design or web media design, or equivalent work experience (MFA or related degree a plus)
-Ability to work iteratively on producing uncluttered, visually striking, action-oriented web designs based on clients’ brand image and style guidelines
-Highly developed skill and sensitivity in typography, composition, color theory, and photography use and manipulation
-Flexible, responsive, and with excellent oral and written communications skills for interfacing with clients and the Purpose Campaigns team
-Three to five years experience designing launched web sites, experience designing for print and related collateral a plus
-Fluency in CSS, HTML, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash
-Familiarity with Drupal CMS and Javascript/jQuery a plus
-Awareness and passion for social and political issues
