Each year the Asia New Zealand Foundation offers three grants of $5,000 to support postgraduate research into contemporary issues in the Asian region. The 2017 application period closes 31 May.

Possible themes include:

My name is Cael Husband; I look after the JET Programme at the Embassy of Canada in Tokyo.
We received a request from Kanazawa Technical College (one of Japan’s select technical schools with programs from Grade 10 through 2nd year university focusing on STEM fields).
They’ve just built a brand new campus that will deliver courses in English, and had asked if we might be able to help them find some Canadian teachers for their high school students. (They have teachers from a few other countries already and would like to bring in some Canadians.)
Ideal candidates would have a teaching certificate with a focus on Math, Science, Physics, or Biology; an M.Ed would be preferred. No Japanese required.
It would be for a 3-year contract; compensation would be around $50-55K (plus subsidized housing). It’s a brand-new facility with an on-site hot spring nestled against the mountains, and sounds like it would be an incredible opportunity for someone with JET experience who would be looking at options for staying in Japan.

The Department of Exchange Visitor Sponsorship provides J-1 visa sponsorship to educational and research institutions, corporate partners, libraries, museums, not-for-profit and other similar organizations. The Exchange Visitor Sponsorship Advisor serves as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) on multiple IIE sponsored programs, provides high-quality customer service to internal clients and reviews back-up documentation.
Essential Functions
- Serves as an ARO, subject to responsibilities set forth in the CFR [22 CFR Part 62] guiding the J Visa. Must be able to make independent decisions in line with the J regulations, IIE’s and best practices under the guidance of the Responsible Officer (RO) and/or lead ARO.
- Reviews back-up documentation and data entry associated with the issuances of the initial Certificate of Eligibility (DS2019).
- Reviews and approve requests from exchange visitors to determine eligibility of the requested activity within sponsorship category based on Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), determine eligibility and approve Academic Training requests, accomplish Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) Real-Time Interactive (RTI) data entry, and provide required Employment Authorization letters.
- Provides training to IIE team members on J regulations, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requirements, and IIE SEVIS systems; establish the standard for IIE’s J sponsorship; interpret regulations and disseminate Department of State regulatory and DHS SEVIS information to IIE team members.
- May be asked to work on special projects such as, but not limited to, process improvements, training and other IIE projects.

He will be attending the upcoming TESOL International Conference in Seattle and will be on a panel titled “Legal Language: Strategies for Effective Communication in Law School” scheduled for March 23.
Comprehensible input for legal English students: Resources, approaches & ideas
International students in LLM and legal English programs at US law schools come to study law, not ESL. At the same time, law study requires deep engagement with texts and concepts that are complex and challenging even for native English speakers. But how do you have substantive class discussions or evaluate students’ legal writing when students are struggling to sufficiently comprehend the language of the reading?
In linguistics, the relevant term is “comprehensible input.”
