WIT Life is a periodic series written by professional Writer/Interpreter/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03). She starts her day by watching Fujisankei’s newscast in Japanese, and here she shares some of the interesting tidbits and trends along with her own observations.
Last month’s Tribeca Film Festival featured the world premiere of the documentary The Departure directed by Lana Wilson. It profiles Ittetsu Nemoto, a Buddhist priest whose lifework is suicide prevention. In the group sessions he holds at his temple, he introduces exercises that attempt to show attendees what ending their lives would really mean in terms of loss and even simulates the experience of dying. Many participants come away with a renewed lease on life, and for those who don’t Nemoto makes himself available to them day and night whenever they need someone to talk to.

On Sunday, May 14th (Mothers’ Day), JETAANY and the Japan Society will be hosting the Yo-Yo Balloon Tent at Japan Day in Central Park.
We’ll be helping visitors “fish” for Yo-yo Balloons and need volunteers to assist in many areas of the booth – including greeting the guests, explaining the game, prepping water balloons, and assisting children with the game.
All volunteers will get a delicious bento lunch, a drink and a free Japan Day t-shirt, plus meet tons of fun people and teach the NYC community a fun Japanese festival game.
Volunteers are needed for two shifts:
#1 Morning 8am-12:30 pm
#2 Afternoon 12 pm-5:00 pm

Fourth Annual Yakiniku BBQ

The Music City JET Alumni Association is excited to host its fourth annual Yakiniku BBQ in Shelby Park on May 20th. We’ll gather at 3:30 and start grilling around 4PM. JETAA will arrange for plates, utensils, non-alcoholic beverages and food including high quality meats (beef and pork from Porter Road Butcher), chicken, rice, and vegetables (bell pepper, onion, garlic, kabocha, carrots, etc). In order to off-set costs, we will collect $10 from each guest at the start of the event. JET Alumni and children between 6 and 12 are discounted to $5 each.
This family friendly event is open to JET alumni, family and friends as well as members of the local Japanese community so feel free to spread the word. Please RSVP on our Facebook events page by May 17th so that we can get a solid headcount before purchasing food.
We’re looking for a few extra hands to run the event so please contact Tye Ebel at tyeebel@gmail.com if you can volunteer as a grill master or are able to help us out with food prep before the event.

Gai Koto Jin koto (traditional Japanese instrument) performance

Gai Koto Jin ensemble brings a taste of real Japan to their audiences through the koto, the national instrument of Japan. The koto is similar to a Western harp or dulcimer. The aim of this educational event and performance is to introduce this beautiful and unique instrument and to show its diversity and versatilit. They will perform traditional Japanese compositions, folk songs, covers of familiar Western tunes, and modern koto compositions, including “Uruma” by Sawai Tadao. Audiences will have an opportunity to play the instrument and ask questions. Admission to this event is free.
About Gai Koto Jin:
Gai Koto Jin is Julie A. Palmer, Jessica Entis, and Lori Fannin, who have training from music schools in Japan as well as the United States and have the expertise to educate and entertain. Gai Koto Jin is a portmanteau of the Japanese word for foreigner, gai koku jin, and the name of their instrument, koto. The ensemble has performed at Columbus Asian Festival, Dawes Arboretum, Columbus Museum of Art, Lakeside Chautauqua, Ohayocon, and Midoricon.

Kikagaku Moyo (Geometric Patterns) is the musical union between five free spirits. Go Kurosawa (drums, Vocals) and Tomo Katsurada (Guitar, Vocals) formed the band in 2012 as a free artist’s collective. They met Kotsuguy (Bass) while he was recording noise from vending machines and Akira (Guitar) through their university. Ryu Kurosawa had been studying Sitar in India, upon returning home he found the perfect outlet for his practice. Since 2013 the band has released two full lengths, an EP, and several singles. The U.S. Consulate General in Osaka-Kobe is seeking a Security Escort.
BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION: The incumbent performs all duties of escorts, by monitoring and escorting of uncleared personnel into controlled access areas (CAA) or other locations within mission facilities and grounds. The position is on an as needed basis, after-hours, weekend and holiday work may be required. This position is directly supervised by the Management Officer.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Applicants must address each required qualification criteria listed below with specific information supporting each item. Failure to do so may result in a determination that the applicant is not qualified.
Education: Completion of secondary school is required.
- Prior Work Experience: One year of previous employment in an office environment is required.
- Language Proficiency: Level III* (Good working knowledge) in English is required. Language proficiency may be tested.
- Skills and Abilities:Basic keyboard skills and computer literacy. Must be observant, flexible, and service oriented. Duties include prolonged periods of standing/walking and somewhat physically demanding activities to include climbing, working in cramped spaces and at times working in inclement weather.

Global LT (www.Global-LT.com) enables corporate employees and their families to live and work successfully anywhere in the world. We are currently looking for a private ESL tutor for our client in Woolwich Township, NJ. Please note that we can only consider candidates who can reasonably and regularly commute to the requested location.
The client is a corporate professional who has relocated from Japan to the US on assignment. He is currently at a high-novice/low-intermediate English level and would like to work on listening and speaking, grammar, and idioms. His company has approved for him to take up to 272 hours of English lessons.
These lessons would be once a week at the client’s apartment in Woolwich Township (off Center Square Rd between Auburn and Beckett). He is available for 1.5 hour sessions Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays after 5:30 p.m. He may increase the frequency to twice a week in the future, depending on his schedule.
Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of experience teaching ESL, literacy, and/or adult education. We do not require certification or a teaching license, but formal training in language education is preferred. Global LT’s tutors are independent contractors who create their own lessons and select any materials to be used.
