JAS of the State of Washington

  • Wa in a Sports Bar — Best-selling author Robert Whiting, author of You Gotta Have Wa 2009, will be the featured speaker at JASSW’s cocktail reception. Whiting’s book is an updated version of the original 1989 book You Gotta Have Wa, a book about the cultural conflict between Japan and America, as seen through the common sport of baseball. In his talk, Whiting will address the question of whether Japanese and Americans understand (and like) each other more than they did two decades ago and the subject of how culture still manifests itself in baseball. Following the presentation, visitors can watch the Seattle Mariners play the New York Yankees on three large-screen plasma TVs in a private room. Cost is $20 for JAS members.   • Symposium on Historic Preservation in Kyoto & Boston — This symposium will include comments by the mayor of Kyoto and presentations by leading Japanese and American architects, urban planners and other specialists. Presentations will be in Japanese and English, with simultaneous interpretation. The symposium will be followed by a reception in honor of Mayor Daisaku Kadokawa at the Kyo-no-Machiya (Kyoto House) Boston Children’s Museum. Admission is free but registration is required.

My name is Mark Smith and I am Executive Director of the Japan America Society of the State of Washington.  As some of you may already know, one of our core programs here at the Society is our Japan in the Schools program. This is an educational program driven by volunteers who visit elementary schools and high schools.

In the elementary classroom, a day in the life of Kentaro is brought to life through a large format photo presentation that engages the students in exploring similarities and differences between American and Japanese children’s lives. Students are also taught some Japanese words and they have trying to pick up mini erasers (which they get to keep) with chopsticks. Read More

  • The Berkeley Kite Festival — The JSNC is co-sponsoring this year’s kite festival, featuring multi-line competitions of the Bay Area Sport Kite League, as well as other events and competitions such as candy drops and rokkaku battles. Visitors also can enjoy the giant creature kite show of the Berkeley Kite Wranglers. Highlighting this year’s festival is a delegation from the Sode-cho Kite-Flying Society of Hamamatsu, Japan. Their traditional “Machijirushi” kites are indigenous to Hamamatsu and are made from fine paper and bamboo. This is a chance to meet Japan’s master kite builders and learn about their centuries-old traditional kite designs.

  • Sushi Workshop — Learn all the basic tricks and techniques of making your own sushi. You’ll learn about basic sauces and stocks, how to make sushi rice, how to handle each sushi fish and ingredients for preparation, how to make rolls and how to slice a fish to make sashimi. The cost is $30 per person with all ingredients and materials included, but you should bring your own knife. The reservation deadline is July 23.   • ventriloquistsJapanese Ventriloquism Performance — Now here’s one form of entertainment most JET alumni probably missed during their stay in Japan. So don’t miss this chance to see it. The Japanese Language School of Greater Cincinnati and JASGC have teamed up to present “An Afternoon of Ventriloquism with Takeshi & Shu Ikeda.” Mr. Ikeda is chairman of the Japan Ventriloquists Association (JVA), and he and his wife, Shu, have toured all over Japan and the world, performing at public festivals, elementary schools, churches and conventions. They will be in Northern Kentucky for the Vent Haven International Ventriloquists Conference and have agreed to give two free performances in Japanese for the language school students and JASGC members and their families.

The Milky Way separates these lovers except on July 7, when they are allowed to meet only once a year on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month. At this informal event, you can hear the story of Tanabata, write your wish on a piece of paper and hang it on bamboo. Advanced registration is required with a deadline of July 6.   • Kusakizome-gami Lecture and Workshop – This free lecture will explore Japanese paper dyeing with natural dyes. The talk will include some history of Japanese colored papers from production to use along with techniques of making and applying natural dyes and pigments. During the workshop, participants will be guided through traditional dye preparations and will prepare two different dyes and two mordants for both brush dyeing and dip dyeing. The workshop fee is $110 for JASC members.

Wildlife and nature scenes are his favorite subjects to illustrate, and selected works are now on display at the Front Street Café.

Japan Society: Summer program for high school students (NY)

Attention high school educators and students. Registration is open for our popular summer immersion workshop for high school students, A*NI*ME: Japanese Animation Production: Bring Your Artwork & Characters to Life!, scheduled for August 10-14 and August 17-21 with a screening on August 22nd.

Deadline for application: Thursday, May 21, 2009. Complete applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space-available basis.

Animation is a combination of storytelling, visual arts and acting, expressed through both electronic arts and traditional animation skills. In this two-week intensive workshop, participants will learn firsthand about the history of Japanese animation (anime), its unique features and cross cultural influences in Japan and in the U.S., as well as the market & distribution systems. During the hands-on part of the workshop, participants will gain practical experience creating short anime clips using various animation techniques. Learn about scenario writing, character development, storyboarding, and voiceovers under the guidance of anime production experts, scenario writers and designers, including Dai Sato, Japan’s leading anime scenario writer.

Tuition:

JAS of Northern California

  • Lecture by Patricia MacLachlan – MacLachlan, Professor of Asian Studies at University of Texas, Austin, will give a lecture titled “Two Steps Forward, One Step Back? Political Change (and Non-Change) and the Future of Japanese Business.” MacLachlan will explore the past decade of political change in Japan and implications for innovation and entrepreneurship in the business community, paying particular attention to the ongoing process of postal privatization and other instances of “structural reform.” Free and open to the public. RSVP by April 28.

JS of Boston

  • Contemporary Voices in Clay – Lacoste Gallery presents the work of Jeff Shapiro and four Japanese contemporary ceramic artists: Suzuki Goro, Kakurezaki Ryuichi, Kohyama Yasuhisa and Masamichi Yoshikawa.
    • Date: Saturday, May 2
    • Time: Special gallery talk and walk through with the artists of the exhibition at 2 p.m. (Space is limited; RSVP here .) Opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m.

  • Kodomo No Hi – Children and adults are invited to celebrate Children’s Day through performance and craft making. Watch a play of Japan’s classic stories for children, including Momotaro (Peach Boy) and Kintaro, and song and dance performed by Theater Arts Japan -KIDS-. Following the performance, participants can enjoy Japanese snacks while creating samurai hats and carp streamers, traditional Children’s Day decorations. The program is recommended for children ages 3 to 10. Tickets are $15 per family (up to five members), or just $10 if one family member is a Japan Society member. Advanced ticket purchase is strongly recommended.
