If you’re living in Japan and sporting a slick new iPhone, there are a number of nifty applications available for download to make life a bit easier, or at least a little more fun. From kanji flashcard drills to TV listings to a maps program that helps you find your way around cities with nameless streets, there’s no shortage of potentially useful apps.   • Art of Laughter: The Kyogen Theater of Japan — This program co-sponsored by JSNC sounds sure to bring a smile to your face given that “kyogen” means “wild speech” or “comical tales.” This free, interactive program at the Asian Art Museum will be led by Izumi Junko and Miyake Tokuro, who have been pioneers for opening the Kyogen stage to women. They will demonstrate performance techniques and discuss their careers as the first female performers in this male-dominated field.

JAS of Greater Cincinnati

  • Mind, Body, Spirit — How does a free massage and Japanese oysters sound? Find them at the next meeting of JASC’s 5:01 Club, where you can challenge your mind with Humana video games, talk to a fitness expert from Bob Roncker’s Running Spot for training advice, and receive spirit-lifting reflexology massage while learning about other ways to relax and rejuvenate your spirit.

JS of Boston

  • JapBoatBoat building presentation — JSB invites members to attend a talk and slide presentation by Douglas Brooks, who has apprenticed with four different boat builders in Japan since 1996. He will share his experiences with different crafts drawn from over a dozen trips to Japan. Brooks is a boat builder, writer and researcher who builds traditional wooden boats for museums and private clients. In 2003, he published his first book, The Tub Boats of Sado Island: A Japanese Craftsman’s Methods.

  • Black Ships Festival — Enjoy a variety of events emphasizing Japanese art and culture at the 26th annual Black Ships Festival, an event that commemorates Commodore Matthew Perry’s negotiation of the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854, ending two centuries of Japanese isolationism. A highlight of the festival is the annual Festival of Drums, featuring thundering performances by taiko drummers.

  • 11th Annual Lantern Festival — JSB invites members to attend this moving memorial ceremony inspired by Buddhist rituals. This ritual is based on the traditional Japanese Bon Festival, a time when a door opens to the world of ancestors, allowing us to send messages to the other side.

  • After the Crisis: Corporate Governance in Japan — Experts from Japan and the U.S. will shed light on critical issues and future directions in corporate governance in Japan and abroad.   • Tanabata Festival — Tanabata is a Japanese festival celebrated on July 7 every year. The festival represents the meeting of Orihime and Hikoboshi. The Milky Way separates these lovers except on July 7, when they are allowed to meet only once a year on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month. At this informal event, you can hear the story of Tanabata, write your wish on a piece of paper and hang it on bamboo. Advanced registration is required with a deadline of July 6.   • Kusakizome-gami Lecture and Workshop – This free lecture will explore Japanese paper dyeing with natural dyes. The talk will include some history of Japanese colored papers from production to use along with techniques of making and applying natural dyes and pigments. During the workshop, participants will be guided through traditional dye preparations and will prepare two different dyes and two mordants for both brush dyeing and dip dyeing. The workshop fee is $110 for JASC members.

  • An Evening With Artist Ikki Matsumoto – Ikki Matsumoto, originally born in Tokyo, has successfully made his living in the U.S. for over 50 years as a painter, illustrator, print-maker and designer. In addition to creating his own studio artwork, he has illustrated books, newspaper ads and corporate advertisements. One of his pieces is part of the Smithsonian Museum’s permanent collection. Wildlife and nature scenes are his favorite subjects to illustrate, and selected works are now on display at the Front Street Café.

  • Lecture by Patricia MacLachlan – MacLachlan, Professor of Asian Studies at University of Texas, Austin, will give a lecture titled “Two Steps Forward, One Step Back? Political Change (and Non-Change) and the Future of Japanese Business.” MacLachlan will explore the past decade of political change in Japan and implications for innovation and entrepreneurship in the business community, paying particular attention to the ongoing process of postal privatization and other instances of “structural reform.” Free and open to the public.   • Kodomo No Hi – Children and adults are invited to celebrate Children’s Day through performance and craft making. Watch a play of Japan’s classic stories for children, including Momotaro (Peach Boy) and Kintaro, and song and dance performed by Theater Arts Japan -KIDS-. Following the performance, participants can enjoy Japanese snacks while creating samurai hats and carp streamers, traditional Children’s Day decorations. The program is recommended for children ages 3 to 10. Tickets are $15 per family (up to five members), or just $10 if one family member is a Japan Society member.   • The Rad Smith Program in Japanese Art – The JS of Boston and the Museum of Fine Arts present a program called “Passion in Porcelain: The Ceramic Genius of Sueharu Fukami.” Fukami has been called “Japan’s Greatest Ceramic Artist.” His large sculptural works have transformed the ancient technique of porcelain. Fukami, whose works are featured in the museum’s current exhibit “Celebrating Kyoto,” will discuss his methods of creating ceramic pieces. This program is presented in connection with the 50th anniversary celebration of the Kyoto-Boston Sister City relationship.

JS of New York

  • Web Seminar – The JS of New York will host a seminar by Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa titled “The Way Out of Economic and Financial Crisis: Lessons and Actions.” Shirakawa will address the current global economic crisis and offer lessons from Japan’s recent experience.

  • Rakugo Comedy Performance – Rakugo is a Japanese style of comedy in which a seated performer presents a monologue ending with skillfully delivered punch lines called “ochi.” Sanyutei Kyouraku is a well-known Rakugo storyteller. He will perform with English translation so non-Japanese speakers can enjoy this traditional Japanese entertainment as well. Seats are limited. Tickets are $30 for JASGP members.

  • Haiku Program – Learn about the origins of the art of haiku from a well-known translator of the medium, Jane Reichhold, during her program “The Secrets of Haiku from Master Basho”. Reichhold will discuss Japan’s legendary 17th century poet Matsuo Basho, the creator of haiku. The cost is $8 for society members, $15 for non-members.   • Lecture by Dick Hebdige – Hebdige’s lecture is titled “After Love, After Punk: Takashi Murakami and the Contemporary Japanese Dreamscape.” The JAS describes it this way: In the 30 years since punk icons Richard Hell and Johnny Rotten snagged the public’s attention, punk has become an anti-fashion statement, a marketable music genre and a secessionist lifestyle. The same period of time has witnessed the invasion of the international art- and media-scape by Japanese anime and art phenomenon Takashi Murakami. This talk by Dick Hebdige, who explores punk’s relationship to the mainstream, uses Murakami’s work as a lens to view how ideas and attitudes about youth culture, consumerism, sex and love have changed in the three decades since Hebdige’s book Subculture: The Meaning of Style was published in 1979.

  • Program on HR Issues for Japanese-owned companies – Are you an HR professional working for or with a Japanese-owned company? If so, this program is for you. It’s called “Surviving the Economic Downturn: Human Capital Strategies for Japanese-Owned Companies.” Learn about the economic challenges facing Japan and America today and what they mean to you as an HR professional. This program will focus on the cultural expectations of workers and management in Japanese-owned companies. It also will explore the impact of U.S. labor laws for companies that are working to cut their employee-related expenses or restructure their U.S. workforce.

  • Furoshiki Workshop – Have you ever considered how much trash you produce with gift wrap? Or plastic bags? Shopping bags alone account for 2 million tons of garbage each year in the U.S. Subtract yourself from that statistic by attending this workshop about how furoshiki, a square piece of wrapping cloth traditionally used in Japan for carrying things, can be used to cut down on the amount of trash you produce. The workshop will explore the history of the colorful cloths, examine other cultures that use similar “green” wrapping methods and show how furoshiki can express personality through design and color. Cost is $20.

JAS of Greater Austin, Texas

  • Acupuncture Lecture and Demonstration – Monday, April 6, 7 p.m. at Casa de Luz, 1701 Toomey Road. The first blind acupuncturist in Texas will share the history of blind acupuncture practitioners in Japan, as well as demonstrate how the Toyohari method is different from other methods of acupuncture.   • Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival – Saturday/Sunday, April 11 & 12 in San Francisco’s Japanese quarter, centered at Post and Buchanan streets. Two hundred thousand people attend this bustling street festival each year.   • Nichibei Luncheon – Friday, April 17, 12 – 1:30 p.m. at the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, 300 Carew Tower 441 Vine St. Lauren S. Crane, Assistant Professor of Psychology & East Asia Studies at Wittenberg University, will give a presentation titled “Building Japanese-style and American-style Relationships.” The talk will explore the cross-cultural similarities and differences in relationship-building and consider why Americans and Japanese have different relationship styles in the first place.
