Details: The Program on East Asian Studies at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time / tenure track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences in Premodern Japanese Language and Literature with a preferred subfield in Digital Humanities. Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning in Fall 2024 and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.
The Program on East Asian Studies stands out within a liberal arts context for its faculty expertise in all three major regional areas: China, Korea and Japan. East Asian Studies at Oberlin College is one of the oldest interdisciplinary programs in the U.S. that offers five years of Chinese and four years of Japanese language instruction.
The incumbent will teach the standard teaching load (4.5 courses per year) in the general area of Japanese premodern literature. In addition to teaching topical and lecture courses in their subfield, the applicant will regularly teach Japanese language courses at all levels. The successful applicant will engage in faculty collaboration with the College Museum and Library in advancing digital humanities initiatives.
The incumbent will also be expected to engage in sustained scholarly research and/or other creative work appropriate to the position and participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising and service on committees.
Requirements: Among the qualifications required for appointment is the PhD degree (in hand or expected by first semester of academic year 2024-25. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.
