    US-Japan relations take a positive step–Is it good for JET?

    Thanks to James Gannon (Ehime-ken, 1992-94) (Executive Director of the Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE/USA), author of the July 3 “JET on the Chopping Block” post and one of the newest members of the JETAANY Board of Directors) for sharing this Kyodo News Service article.  Jim also attended the event in the context of his work for JCIE/USA.

    No big news to report from the gathering, which included Senator Jim Webb (D-Va).  But perhaps this is a step that could lay the groundwork for a stronger US-Japan relationship in the future, which in turn could have a positive impact on the future of JET and JETAA.

    The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP), New York is pleased to announce that we are continuing with the J-Initiative launched last year in 2010 in order to promote networking, capacity building, and innovative program development for US-Japan exchange and outreach. We welcome innovative and future-oriented proposals from every field.

    Grants of up to $100,000 per year and up to three (3) years will be awarded.  The deadline for concept paper submission is March 10, and if invited after the concept paper review, the full proposal will be due by May 31.

    Japan Travel Program for US Future Leaders 2010 Report Publication

    CGP in collaboration with the Association of Professional Schools of International  Affairs (APSIA) inaugurated the Japan Travel Program for US Future Leaders in 2009  with the goal of fostering a new generation of future leaders in the US who are  interested in achieving a greater understanding of Japan.

    The report is based on their experiences in Japan and was compiled by the students following the conclusion of the program.

    Job Position: Senior Program Assistant, Abe Fellowship Program (Tokyo)

    Job Details:

    The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) seeks a Senior Program Assistant for its Tokyo office. This hire would be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Abe Fellowship Program under the supervision of the Program Manager in the Tokyo Office. The Abe Fellowship Program encourages international multidisciplinary research on topics of pressing global concern. The program fosters the development of a new generation of researchers interested in policy-relevant topics and willing to become key members of a bilateral and global research network. In partnership with the SSRC, the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) established the Abe Fellowship Program as its flagship program in 1991.

    Responsibilities:

    * Support Abe Fellowship Program Manager with administration of the program.
    * Administrative tasks including, but not limited to: file maintenance, preparing meeting materials, maintaining databases and spreadsheets, and updating program websites and outreach materials.
    * Manage logistics for domestic and international program-related events, including advisors meetings, workshops and meetings of scholars.
    * Arrange outreach activities, create program materials, and assist with marketing strategy.
    * Liaise with the funder, program committee members, and fellows.
    * Manage expenditures and reimbursements, and monitor the program budget.
    * Correspond and cooperate with the New York Office Abe Program staff.
    * Other duties and additional responsibilities and projects as directed, depending upon interest and capacity.

    General Requirements:

    * Minimum 3 years experience in program administration.
    * Fluency in Japanese and proficiency in English (language and culture) are required.
    * Experience in an academic or non-profit environment preferred.
    * Master’s degree a plus, but not required.
    * Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    * Excellent organizational skills, with strong attention to detail.
    * Team player who is also self-motivated and can work independently within a professional office environment.
    * Proficient in Microsoft office suite, database work and Internet applications.
    * This position requires work authorization in Japan.

    Apologies for any confusion or inconvenience.  Previously, I had set up a “Jet Wit” personal account on Facebook.  However, apparently the Facebook gods frown about any Facebook page that’s not an actual person, and–POOF!–just like that the Jet Wit account which had friended many, many JETs and JET alums…..simply disappeared.

    So now I’ve delved into strange world of Facebook “Pages” where you have to get people to like you and setting up and using the pages seems to be far less intuitive than something like this really ought to be.  All I ask is for your patience and that everyone be an obedient sheep by “liking” the page while I get my head around the set-up and figure out how to make this all a bit more functional and convenient for everyone.

    I learned recently from our friends at the free Japanese weekly Shukan NY Seikatsu that “food” is the leading driver of tourism to Japan from the U.S. these days.  With that in mind, I thought it might be helpful (not to mention oishii and natsukashii) if the JET and JET alum community were to share personal anecdotes about cooking while living in Japan.

    The Best Prefectures: By JET Alum LinkedIn Groups

    A couple weeks ago JetWit requested that JETs and JET alums join their respective JET Alum LinkedIn Groups.  The goal has been to start laying the groundwork for prefecture governments to see a higher “return on JET-vestment” and over time provide a greater incentive for prefectures to hire JETs rather than NETs or dispatch company ALTs.

    Survey of American Alumni of the JET Program

    The survey is being conducted by JET alum Emily Metzgar, Assistant Professor at Indiana University’s School of Journalism. Her research focuses on public diplomacy, political communication and social media.  (Click here to read Emily’s bio.)  The survey has been approved by Indiana University’s Institutional Review Board.

    Note #1:  This is the first attempt at a comprehensive survey of the JET alumni community.  I completed the survey myself and it takes about 10 or 15 minutes.  FYI, completing the survey is one more step you can take to help the future of JET.

    Note #2:  Although full participation in the survey is limited to Americans who participated in the JET Program, the link above also provides an opportunity for all interested parties to request updates about research.

    JET Alums Run Thriving Translation/Consulting Business in…..Kentucky?

    By most assumptions, Georgetown, KY, would not necessarily be the first place you’d expect to find a colony of JET alums. And yet. The town 20 minutes north of Lexington, in the center of the horse and bourbon country, is home to four ex-JETs working under the same roof.

    Peter Purins (Toyama-ken, 2000-03), Zach Graham (Niigata-ken, 1999-2000) and Roy Harrison (Saitama, 2004-07) all work at Consultant Solutions, Inc. (CSI), itself run by a JET alum: Thad Johnson (Hyogo, 2000-1). The 18 person company, covering Canada, Japan, KY, TX, MS, AL, IN and OH, works with Japanese firms looking to strengthen their positions and capabilities in the North American market. They consult in three fields: language training, translation, and technical support.

    Thad acquired the company in 2005, and brought in Roy from Vermont, Zach from New Mexico, and Peter from Australia/Okinawa in 2008. Together they provide translation and technical services to firms in the automotive manufacturing industry.

    Why so many JETs? In part because they’re a known quantity. Beyond just the competitiveness of acceptance into the JET Program guaranteeing a certain caliber of person and familiarity with Japanese, many of the values of the program are important in the business world, including a person’s flexibility, cooperative spirit and international awareness.

    WIT Life #155: 日本へ行ってきます!

    WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Writer/Interpreter/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03). She starts her day by watching Fujisankei’s newscast in Japanese, and here she shares some of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.

    Just a quick message to let all readers know that I will be heading to Japan tomorrow after a hiatus of two years to participate in next Sunday’s Tokyo Marathon (“The Day That Tokyo Becomes One”)!  I am very much looking forward to my 4th running of the event as well as seeing old friends, eating amazing food on a daily basis and of course most of all onsen. I will do my best to report from the ground, but chances are I might get caught up in the moment and not be blogging as much as I had hoped.  In that case, please look forward to a full update when I return in March.  De wa, ittekimasu~!
