The Yomiuri Shimbun is Japan’s largest daily newspaper. We are headquartered in Tokyo and have 26 international bureaus, three of which are in the United States: New York, Washington, and Los Angeles.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a strong interest in current affairs, especially American society, politics, and culture. An interest in journalism, attention to accuracy and the ability to multitask effectively under deadline is required. Applicants should already be based in New York region.
Job Description: Main duties involve research and reporting to assist the Yomiuri’s New York Bureau Chief and other Japanese correspondents stationed in New York.
In the coming months, stories related to the 2024 election and coverage of legal cases involving election disputes and former President Trump’s criminal cases will be one focus.
Work includes covering press briefings, tracking relevant stories, arranging and conducting interviews, doing research, coming up with story ideas, etc. The person hired will also do reporting covering news and features in other areas, including social issues, cultural coverage, the United Nations, sports, and breaking news.
Since articles are in Japanese, there are no byline opportunities in this position and some transcribing of briefings and interviews that you cover is required.
Applicants must be prepared to work occasional overtime. Some prior journalism experience at college newspaper or other publication is preferred.
Base Salary is approximately $40,000 annually plus additional overtime. Compensation includes excellent medical and dental insurance, and a 401(k). Job is a hybrid work setting with 2 to 3 days minimum in office.
