Position: Study Abroad Advisor

Overview:

The study abroad advisor is a mid-level position in the Study Abroad Office within the International Programs unit. The advisor performs a variety of duties in support of the recruitment, advisement, placement, orientation and re-entry of USC students interested in education abroad opportunities. The individual also provides support services for students who are intending to go to destinations of high risk overseas.  In addition, the advisor conducts workshops, leads curriculum integration activities, manages scholarship programs, and assists in program administration, assessment and development. As a staff member in a multi-function office, position will include additional responsibilities as assigned on behalf of international exchange students and American students who study overseas.  For more information on Carolina’s study abroad program, go to www.studyabroad.sc.edu

Job Duties:

Advises USC students about opportunities for study, intern/work, research, and volunteering abroad. Assists students in identifying the appropriate program and sources of funding, as well as academic planning.

Provides administrative support for study abroad programs by facilitating application processes for incoming and outgoing exchange students; managing exchange relationships; acting as a liaison with the Financial Aid office, academic advisors, the Registrar’s Office; and related services. In consultation with the Director/Associate Director, provides issue resolution for unique situations encountered.

Conducts workshops and presentations on financial aid, scholarship opportunities, overseas program options, pre-departure orientation and reentry. Promotes study abroad both on and off campus using a variety of formats, and for special populations and programs as assigned; develops printed and web based materials as needed.

Responsible for monitoring world events where USC students are studying/planning to study and initiating/maintaining contact with affected students.  Responsible for managing Destination of Risk process, consulting with Director.

Collaborates on assessment initiatives; manages curriculum integration projects in collaboration with Associate Director and academic units.  Manages assigned scholarship programs. Additional projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Master’s degree in Student Personnel Services or related field, or bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of two years of relevant professional work experience; experience advising college students; outstanding written and oral communication skills; experience studying, working, and/or living abroad; and strong computer and presentation skills. Preferred qualifications: Master’s degree; study abroad advising experience; promotion or marketing experience; foreign language skills; academic degree related to international education.
