{"id":9852,"date":"2009-12-15T14:32:37","date_gmt":"2009-12-15T18:32:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/?p=9852"},"modified":"2009-12-15T14:36:04","modified_gmt":"2009-12-15T18:36:04","slug":"wit-life-62-otaku-analysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2009\/12\/15\/wit-life-62-otaku-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"WIT Life #62: Otaku analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/category\/wit-life\/\"><em><strong>WITLi<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/category\/wit-life\/\"><strong>fe<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>is a periodic series written by professional Translator\/<\/em><em>Interpreter\/<\/em><em>Writer <strong><a onclick=\"pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outbound\/article\/www.stacysmith.webs.com');\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stacysmith.webs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stacy Smith<\/a><\/strong> <strong>(Kumamoto-ken, 20<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>00-03)<\/strong>.\u00a0 Recently she\u2019s been <\/em><em>watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese and sharing some of the interesting tidbits and trends togeth<\/em><em>e<\/em><em>r <\/em><em>w<\/em><em>ith h<\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/theinternetisterrible.com\/wp-content\/things\/subway_ride.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"274\" \/><em>er own<\/em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> <\/span><\/span><em>obser<\/em><em>vat<\/em><em>ions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Rochelle Kopp at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.japanintercultural.com\/en\/home\/default.aspx\">Japan Intercultural Consulting<\/a>, I was alerted to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2009\/12\/14\/why-weird-japan-sell.html\">article<\/a> posted to the website Boing Boing by Lisa Katayama, writer and commentator on modern Japanese society.\u00a0 In a <a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2009\/07\/29\/wit-life-46-defining-adulthood-hostess-envy-and-2-d-love\/#more-7711\">previous post<\/a> this summer, I had discussed Katayama&#8217;s New York Times magazine article about the subcategory of <em>otaku <\/em>men and women who indulge in real relationships with imaginary characters.\u00a0 This time around she focuses on not taking the weirdness of Japan too seriously.\u00a0 As an example, she cites the strange story last month of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2009\/11\/24\/footage-from-the-fir.html\">Japanese man wedding an anime game character<\/a> which received much attention.<\/p>\n<p>This morning I was surprised to find the topic of <em>otaku<\/em> also taken up by <!--more-->NYT editorial contributor Roger Cohen in his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/12\/15\/opinion\/15iht-edcohen.html?th&amp;emc=th\">column<\/a> entitled Japanese Obsessions.\u00a0 He concedes that &#8220;we\u2019re all going a little otaku in a world where technology encourages a solipsistic retreat into private worlds and even flirting has been cyber-infected,&#8221; but holds firm to the notion that Japan goes above and beyond this.\u00a0 Cohen argues that the four factors of\u00a0 wealth, postmodernism, conformism and despair in Japan have contributed to the <em>otaku<\/em> concept having been taken the furthest in this country.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Japanese despair, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/12\/10\/AR2009121003162.html\">this article<\/a> from last week&#8217;s Washington Post (also courtesy of Rochelle) discusses the relevance of today&#8217;s Japan, especially in terms of the new administration.\u00a0 He raises the question as to whether Japan still matters, and comes up with a resounding yes while acknowledging that its place in the world and in the context of the U.S.-Japan alliance has definitively changed.\u00a0 As we approach the end of 2009, it will be interesting to see what the new year bring in terms of both Japanese cultural trends and politics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Translator\/Interpreter\/Writer Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken, 2000-03).\u00a0 Recently she\u2019s been watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese and sharing some of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.
