{"id":9551,"date":"2009-11-30T13:31:39","date_gmt":"2009-11-30T17:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/?p=9551"},"modified":"2009-11-30T13:34:50","modified_gmt":"2009-11-30T17:34:50","slug":"wit-life-59-winter-culinary-trends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2009\/11\/30\/wit-life-59-winter-culinary-trends\/","title":{"rendered":"WIT Life #59: Winter culinary trends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/category\/wit-life\/\"><em><strong>WITLi<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/category\/wit-life\/\"><strong>fe<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>is a periodic series written by professional Translator\/<\/em><em>Interpreter\/<\/em><em>Writer <strong><a onclick=\"pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outbound\/article\/www.stacysmith.webs.com');\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stacysmith.webs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stacy Smith<\/a><\/strong> <strong>(Kumamoto-ken, 20<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>00-03)<\/strong>.\u00a0 Recently she\u2019s been <\/em><em>watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese and sharing some of the interesting tidbits and trends togeth<\/em><em>e<\/em><em>r <\/em><em>w<\/em><em>ith h<\/em><em>er own<\/em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> <\/span><\/span><em>obser<\/em><em>vat<\/em><em>ions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not we will be greeting the new year in about a month, and today&#8217;s news took a look at what is being forecast for \u304a\u6b63\u6708 (<em>oshougatsu) <\/em>2010.\u00a0 Similar to last year, it is expected that in light of the dismal economic climate there will be a tendency toward \u5de3\u7bed\u308a (<em>sugomori)<\/em>, literally <a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2008\/12\/17\/witlife-9-fake-takenoko-and-new-year%E2%80%99s-nesting\/#more-2359\">nesting<\/a> or staying close to home as opposed to going abroad or visiting one&#8217;s family.\u00a0 Compared to last year, there has been 30% increased sales of two-person servings of <em>osechi ryouri<\/em>.\u00a0 According to an\u00a0<em>osechi <\/em>salesperson at a department store, this goes along with <!--more-->the <em>sugomori<\/em> trend because as gatherings have become smaller people are buying their meals in decreased sizes.\u00a0 There has even bee<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/image.blog.livedoor.jp\/hotbbsakai\/imgs\/7\/8\/784ff0ce.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"386\" height=\"305\" \/>n the advent of mini <em>osechi <\/em>which go for a little as 1000 yen, but with their various selections provide the feeling of a grander <em>osechi <\/em>spread. \u00a0\u00a0<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some dog lovers might be wondering how all of this downsizing is affecting the canines of Japan, known to receive lavish attention from their owners.\u00a0 Fear not, they will not be neglected due to the economic downturn.\u00a0 At Tokyo&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hot-dog.co.jp\/news2.html\">Deco&#8217;s Dog Cafe<\/a>, you can celebrate the new year together with\u00a0 \u611b\u72ac\u304a\u305b\u3061 (<em>aiken osechi)<\/em>.\u00a0 This 4800 yen meal includes offerings such as roast beef and vegetable pound cake that can be enjoyed by both owner and pet.<\/p>\n<p>In other winter food news, some exciting types of <em>nabe<\/em> have hit the scene.\u00a0 \u3082\u3064\u934b (<em>motsu nabe<\/em>) made from beef or pork offal has always been popular, but recently pumpkin has been added to it to make \u30d1\u30f3\u30d7\u30ad\u30f3 \u3082\u3064\u934b.\u00a0 Other new creations of late have been cheese nabe, a Western-style nabe which uses cheese as a topping, as well as tomato nabe, which can incorporates tomatoes themselves or ketchup.\u00a0 I&#8217;m curious to see if Japanese restaurants here in NYC reflect these new trends in their <em>bounenkai\/shinnenkai<\/em> menus!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Translator\/Interpreter\/Writer Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken, 2000-03).\u00a0 Recently she\u2019s been watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese and sharing some of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.
