{"id":9468,"date":"2009-11-23T10:31:34","date_gmt":"2009-11-23T14:31:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/?p=9468"},"modified":"2009-11-23T10:34:41","modified_gmt":"2009-11-23T14:34:41","slug":"wit-life-58-%e5%8b%a4%e5%8a%b4%e6%84%9f%e8%ac%9d%e3%81%ae%e6%97%a5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2009\/11\/23\/wit-life-58-%e5%8b%a4%e5%8a%b4%e6%84%9f%e8%ac%9d%e3%81%ae%e6%97%a5\/","title":{"rendered":"WIT Life #58: \u52e4\u52b4\u611f\u8b1d\u306e\u65e5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/category\/wit-life\/\"><em><strong>WITLi<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/category\/wit-life\/\"><strong>fe<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>is a periodic series written by professional Translator\/<\/em><em>Interpreter\/<\/em><em>Writer <strong><a onclick=\"pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outbound\/article\/www.stacysmith.webs.com');\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stacysmith.webs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stacy Smith<\/a><\/strong> <strong>(Kumamoto-ken, 20<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>00-03)<\/strong>.\u00a0 Recently she\u2019s been <\/em><em>watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese and sharing some of the interesting tidbits and trends togeth<\/em><em>e<\/em><em>r <\/em><em>w<\/em><em>ith h<\/em><em>er own<\/em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> <\/span><\/span><em>obser<\/em><em>vat<\/em><em>ions.<\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/livedoor.blogimg.jp\/ar0505\/imgs\/4\/f\/4f618789.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we get ready to prepare our turkeys, stuff ourselves silly and max out on football, yesterday Japan celebrated their own day of appreciation with \u52e4\u52b4\u611f\u8b1d\u306e\u65e5(<em>kinrou kansha no hi<\/em>) or Labor Thanksgiving Day.\u00a0 More than anything else this gave Japanese citizens a three day weekend to relax and enjoy.\u00a0 The keyword for how this long weekend was spent was \u300c\u5b89\u30fb\u8fd1\u30fb\u611f\u300d (<em>an\/kin\/kan)<\/em>, meaning &#8220;cheap, close and feeling.&#8221;\u00a0 The first two words are self-explanatory, and the last one refers to the experience, such as getting a sense of the season.<\/p>\n<p>For Tokyoites, this meant to going to places like <!--more-->famous hot springs area Hakone for some soaking and leaf watching.\u00a0 One tourist stated her reason for coming with her family as, &#8220;Hakone is close to home and we wanted to see the leaves changing color.&#8221;\u00a0 From Tokyo Hakone is easily accessible by train, but with the newly implemented 1000 yen flat highway fee the holiday roads were congested with cars.<\/p>\n<p>An even more local spot that is pleasing denizens of Tokyo is \u7687\u5c45 (<em>koukyo<\/em>), or the environs of the Imperial Palace.\u00a0 Known as &#8220;runners&#8217; paradise,&#8221; this roughly 5K loop surrounding the residence of Japan&#8217;s imperial family has a variety of scenery that keeps athletes as well as walkers and tourists entertained.\u00a0 In response to the recent running boom in Japan (approximated to have started when the Tokyo Marathon was instituted in 2007), some shower and changing room facilities have been built by the palace.\u00a0 Previously runners&#8217; only option for getting clean after a workout were nearby <em>sento<\/em>s, but those interviewed on this morning&#8217;s news unanimously agreed that it was much more convenient now.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you here who are lucky enough to have a four-day Thanksgiving weekend, does \u300c\u5b89\u30fb\u8fd1\u30fb\u611f\u300d come close to describing how you will be spending it?\u00a0 In this battered economy, chances are similar patterns will be seen here in the States as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Translator\/Interpreter\/Writer Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken, 2000-03).\u00a0 Recently she\u2019s been watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese and sharing some of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.
