A story just published<\/a> in the new December issue of VANITY FAIR<\/strong><\/em><\/a> chronicles the way Japanese kawaii<\/em>, or super-cuteness, has conquered America: <\/span>http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/culture\/features\/2009\/12\/cuteness-200912<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Roland Kelts<\/a> (Osaka-shi, 1998-99)<\/strong>, author of Japanamerica<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, is quoted fairly liberally via an interview with Vanity Fair<\/em> writer Jim Windolf<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0Here’s a sample:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that cuteness has been a part of the Japanese aesthetic since the postwar years,\u201d says Roland Kelts, the author of the 2006 book Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture Has Invaded the U.S. \u201cOne theory, which has been proposed by a lot of Japanese artists and academics, is that, after the humiliation and emasculation of Japan in the postwar years, Japan developed this quasi-queer position of \u2018little brother\u2019 or \u2018little boy.\u2019 If you become \u2018little brother\u2019 or \u2018little boy,\u2019 the only way you can get big brother\u2019s or fat man\u2019s attention is by being so cute or puppy-like that he has to take care of you.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
