Yosa-koi Dance Project<\/p><\/div>\n

Greetings\u00a0Fellow Former JETS!<\/p>\n

It’s that time of year again! My uber-cool yosa-koi<\/em> dance team is once more looking for new members to audition!<\/p>\n

“But Kirsten,” you say, scratching your head. “I don’t dance. Even if I did dance, I still have no idea what yosa-koi<\/em> is!”<\/p>\n

No worries, gentle coz. You are not alone.<\/p>\n

Yosa-koi <\/em>is a\u00a0 festival dance performed widely throughout Japan. If you’ve ever attended a Sports or Culture Festival at any of your schools in Japan, there is a good chance you witnessed the clackety-clack of multiple naruko<\/em> at work. It’s fun, it’s exciting and it’s a great way to meet other Japanese artists\/performers in the city.<\/p>\n

For those already familiar with the term:<\/p>\n

Do you love nothing more than flailing about with naruko<\/em>? (wooden instrument, NOT\u00a0some girl\u2019s\u00a0name! ^^)\u00a0\u00a0Are you an aspiring performer\/dancer with an interest in Japanese culture?\u00a0 Are you a non-performer\/dancer with an interest in Japanese culture? Do you just really miss Japan\u00a0and dream of becoming one of the crazy sexy cool people in this flier?<\/p>\n

Then\u00a0fantasize no more!<\/p>\n

Hi, I\u2019m Kirsten<\/strong><\/a>, a\u00a0former ALT\u00a0based in Niigata Prefecture 2005-2008<\/strong>.\u00a0 One of the things I missed most about my life in Japan was an awesome and\u00a0energetic festival\u00a0dance called yosa-koi<\/em> that I used to perform together\u00a0with my students.\u00a0 I missed it so much when I came back that I Googled \u201cNY\u201d and \u201cYosa-koi<\/em>\u201d and found 10tecomai<\/em>. For a JET with raging Japan withdrawal\u00a0like myself being a member of 10tecomai<\/em> was like\u00a0a dream come true.<\/p>\n

Like the flier says, no dance experience is necessary. I can attest to that, folks.\u00a0 I have\u00a0zero\u00a0background in performance or dance but I quickly found this was not required. \u00a0You will be expertly and patiently trained, no\u00a0matter what level you are and you will have\u00a0TONS of fun in the process.\u00a0However, team spirit and serious<\/strong> dedication are an absolute\u00a0must.\u00a0My experience with 10tecomai<\/em> has been truly rewarding and fulfilling on so many levels. I\u2019m sad I no longer live in Japan but I am overjoyed to be a part of 10teco.<\/p>\n

10tecomai will be performing with Taiko Masala at 10 PM on Thursday <\/strong><\/em>August 27th, at Matsuri located at 369 W. 16th Street.

You do not have to eat in the restaurant to see the show. There is an upstairs lounge\/bar at street level where you can get a great view of the performance.\u00a0 Matsuri is a gorgeous space so I highly recommend checking it out! Hope to see you there!<\/p>\n
