News Assistant \/ Receptionist
\nAsahi Shimbun, New York bureau<\/p>\n

The Asahi Shimbun, a major Japanese newspaper, has an opening for a news assistant \/ receptionist in its New York bureau located in Times Square. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Job Description<\/strong>:\u00a0The assistant will be required to perform two separate duties:\u00a0 news assistant and receptionist.<\/p>\n

\nNews assistant duties include<\/strong>:
\n-Monitoring major news events and quickly relaying this information to reporters
\n-Registering for credentials for events in a timely manner and following up to make sure the correct registrations have been secured in time
\n-Arranging travel schedules for reporters attending news events and press conferences
\n-Developing and maintaining contacts with media relations staff\u00a0
\n-Transcribing interviews\u00a0
\n-Occasionally attending events \/ press conferences and assisting with reporting as necessary
\n-In the case of breaking news that requires additional research staff (major disasters, election coverage, etc.), assisting reporters in the bureau as necessary (may require overtime)<\/p>\n

Receptionist duties include<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0
\n-Answering and directing telephone calls; taking and relaying phone messages
\n-Monitoring the general e-mail address for the New York bureau and forwarding all e-mails to the correct staff member
\n-Drafting correspondence on behalf of the bureau (including e-mails and letters)
\n-Fielding calls from public relations staff and accepting \/ forwarding press releases to reporters as necessary
\n-Greeting visitors to the bureau
\n-Maintaining the appropriate amount of office supplies and making new orders as necessary
\n-General office duties, such as making coffee and collecting and distributing newspapers\u00a0<\/p>\n

Requirements<\/strong>:
\n-A college degree, preferably in Journalism, Communications or a related field
\n-Friendly, professional demeanor and upbeat attitude; courteous and kind phone manner
\n-Detail-oriented with excellent multi-tasking skills
\n-Proficiency using MS Office programs (MS Word)
\n-Excellent Internet research skills
\n-Typing speed of at least 45 wpm preferred<\/p>\n

Hours<\/strong>:\u00a0 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.\u00a0 Some paid overtime and weekend work may be required.\u00a0 The position will begin as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

This position is paid by the hour (between $16 and $20 per hour, depending on experience).\u00a0\u00a0 This position does not offer health care benefits or paid vacation.<\/p>\n
