{"id":5190,"date":"2009-04-17T15:00:25","date_gmt":"2009-04-17T15:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/?p=5190"},"modified":"2009-05-20T10:37:32","modified_gmt":"2009-05-20T14:37:32","slug":"witlife-35-hero-worship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2009\/04\/17\/witlife-35-hero-worship\/","title":{"rendered":"WIT Life #35: Hero Worship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>*******************************************************************************************************************************<em><strong><a href=\"..\/category\/wit-life\/\"><\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/category\/wit-life\/\">WITLife<\/a> <\/strong>is a periodic series written by professional Interpreter\/Translator\/Writer <strong><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outbound\/article\/www.stacysmith.webs.com');\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stacysmith.webs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stacy Smith<\/a><\/strong> (Kumamoto-ken, 2000-03).\u00a0 Recently she\u2019s been watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese and sharing some of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A recent survey of Japanese young men regarding which famous figure they would want to become resulted in Ichiro Suzuki,<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/ladiesdotdotdot.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/07\/suzuki1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"183\" \/> Ryoma Sakamoto and Ryo Ishikawa for the top 3.\u00a0 The person in the #1 slot is the most recognizable, especially now that he just broke the Japanese record for most career hits with his 3086th in yesterday&#8217;s game against the Angels (though the Mariners ultimately went on to lose).\u00a0 In the stands to witness this feat was Ichiro&#8217;s bat maker (perhaps craftsman is a more appropriate term) of the past 15 years.\u00a0 He was thrilled to be part of the historical moment, and expressed his desire that the next record he wants Ichiro to break is for 4000 hits.\u00a0 A matsuri mood pervaded Japan in celebrating Ichiro&#8217;s feat, and in honor of his accomplishment one store created <!--more-->a shrine to him complete with a samurai doll bearing his face!<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of samurai, #2\u00a0 Ryoma Sakamoto was one of the main characters in a play called Samurai Takamine Jokichi put on last week here in the city.\u00a0 This performance featur<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/cache.eb.com\/eb\/image?id=100931&amp;rendTypeId=4\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"189\" \/>ed the life story of the title character, a Japanese chemist who made notable medical and cultural contributions during his time here in the States.\u00a0 He was instrumental in bringing the cherry blossoms to DC, as well as founding the Nippon Club and Japan Society.\u00a0 It is thought that Ryoma served as a mentor to the younger Jokichi when they were in Nagasaki together when Jokichi studied there as a teenager.\u00a0 Ryoma was a leader of the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa Bakufu and a greatly admired revolutionary who was assasinated at age 33.\u00a0 According to the actor who played Ryoma, he was surprised by the legions of Ryoma fans everywhere in Japan they performed.<\/p>\n<p>#3 on the list was the 17-year old golfing sensation Ryo Ishikawa who made his debut at the Masters tournament last week and who I profiled at the end of <a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2009\/04\/09\/witlife-34-tectonic-shift-in-japans-big-hitters\/#more-5024\">my last post<\/a> .\u00a0 He unfortunately was unable to make the cut this time, but remained upbeat despite this disappointment saying, &#8220;It might be only natural, but passing the first round with my current ability is difficult.\u00a0 I came to realize my weaknesses, and I realized I have to try harder.&#8221;\u00a0 This young athlete&#8217;s humble attitude and willingness to <em>ganbaru<\/em> are likely to lead to more successful Masters appearances in the future.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/onlineigo.org\/writing2\/uploaded_images\/20080528-00000001-gdo-golf-view-000-700050.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"186\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>******************************************************************************************************************************* WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Interpreter\/Translator\/Writer Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken, 2000-03).\u00a0 Recently she\u2019s been watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese and sharing some of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.
