{"id":5024,"date":"2009-04-09T20:34:36","date_gmt":"2009-04-09T20:34:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/?p=5024"},"modified":"2009-05-20T10:38:57","modified_gmt":"2009-05-20T14:38:57","slug":"witlife-34-tectonic-shift-in-japans-big-hitters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2009\/04\/09\/witlife-34-tectonic-shift-in-japans-big-hitters\/","title":{"rendered":"WIT Life #34: Tectonic Shift in Japan&#8217;s Big Hitters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>************************************************************************************************************<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/category\/wit-life\/\">WITLife<\/a> <\/strong>is a periodic series written by professional Interpreter\/Translator\/Writer <strong><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outbound\/article\/www.stacysmith.webs.com');\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stacysmith.webs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stacy Smith<\/a><\/strong> (Kumamoto-ken, 2000-03).\u00a0 Recently she\u2019s been watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese and sharing some of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Following up on the recent <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/category\/j-news-mini-round-up\/\"><strong>J-News Mini-Roundup<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/strong> posted on jetwit, the unemployment craze is also having an effect on the kinds of jobs new Japanese graduates want to apply for.\u00a0 According to a survey by Recruit of 5810 college students and 2099 grad<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3355\/3318963900_10bdf9caba.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"189\" \/>uate students from the class of 2010, travel industries come out ahead while manufacturing jobs were left in the dust.\u00a0 The financial and insurance industries also came out strong, occupying five of the top ten spots.\u00a0 Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) took the top spot after being 4th last year, and in 2nd was East Japan Railway Company (JR East).\u00a0 All Nippon Airways (ANA), which had claimed the top spot last year, trailed at 3rd and Mizuho Financial Group came in 4th.<\/p>\n<p>The largest descents were those of <!--more-->Toyota, which after occupying the 6th spot last year sunk to 96th, and Sony which went from 14th to 55th!\u00a0 Clearly the huge amount of downsizing that is taking place in Japanese manufacturing is having a large effect on career prospects for new grads.\u00a0 Says a Recruit representative, &#8220;Companies like the railways that are related to social infrastructure are still performing well in these tough economic times.\u00a0 On the other hand, manufacturers are showing poor results and their constant news of layoffs causes students to have the impression that there is little opportunity there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the gender breakdown, for males the top choice was JR Central whereas for females it was ANA.\u00a0 Those in the humanities favored JR Central, and those in the sciences went for JR East Japan.\u00a0 Grad students in the sciences opted for Panasonic followed by Sony.<\/p>\n<p>(Source: April 9, 2009 Daily Sun newspaper)<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/onlineigo.org\/writing2\/uploaded_images\/20080528-00000001-gdo-golf-view-000-700050.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"161\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In other news, 19-year old golfer Ryo Ishikawa will make history by being the second youngest player in Masters history.\u00a0\u00a0At the year&#8217;s first major golf championship that begins today, he will tee off on Friday in the final group alongside fellow teen star Rory McIlroy (19) of Ireland.\u00a0 He received a special invitation to attend, and regarding the opportunity to play here Ishikawa said, &#8220;It&#8217;s like a dream.\u00a0 I still can&#8217;t believe I&#8217;m at    Augusta National.&#8221;\u00a0 His performance will determine whether he becomes a household name in the States, but in Japan he is ubiquitous.\u00a0 During my recent trip, I found him plastered all over posters for ANA with a fanciful theme that had him in the role of pilot encouraging passengers to fly with him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>************************************************************************************************************ WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Interpreter\/Translator\/Writer Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken, 2000-03).\u00a0 Recently she\u2019s been watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese and sharing some of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.
