After a pause during the pandemic, we couldn\u2019t be more proud for JAPAN CUTS to return with two weeks of exciting, thought-provoking and tear-jerking films. We\u2019re honored to share a captivating slice of Japan\u2019s cinematic world with New York!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s festival spans 12 days and features 24 feature-length films and five short films across Feature Slate, Next Generation, and Short Film Spotlight sections, as well as a special tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/615a55916dadb047431247ce\/c7e26170-7613-4384-a8b5-664f74e245a6\/QynAmzI5.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>\u00a9 I.T.PLANNING,INC.\u00a9 2022 THE FIRST SLAM DUNK Film Partners.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kicking off this year\u2019s festival, JAPAN CUTS is excited to present the East Coast Premiere of&nbsp;<em>THE FIRST SLAM DUNK<\/em>&nbsp;as its opening film.&nbsp;<em>THE FIRST SLAM DUNK<\/em>&nbsp;is the number one movie at the Japanese box office this year, and it is the first new feature-length film from the&nbsp;<em>SLAM DUNK<\/em>&nbsp;franchise in over 33 years, as well as manga creator&nbsp;Takehiko Inoue&#8217;s directorial debut. JAPAN CUTS will present this very special screening in partnership with GKIDS and Toei Animation ahead of the film\u2019s upcoming nationwide theatrical release.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/615a55916dadb047431247ce\/6557e70b-f64e-4b22-9c5a-ab4c37fb69ae\/_ErJN3Rd.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>\u00a9 Turquoise Sky Film Partners, IFI Production, KTRFILMS<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading this year\u2019s guests, JAPAN CUTS will present acclaimed actor\u00a0Yuya Yagira\u00a0with this year\u2019s\u00a0CUT ABOVE Award for Outstanding Achievement in Film\u00a0for his lead role in our centerpiece film,\u00a0<em>Under the Turquoise Sky<\/em>\u00a0from director\u00a0KENTARO. Yagira was the youngest-ever winner of the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival\u00a0for his lead in Hirokazu Kore-eda\u2019s\u00a0<em>Nobody Knows<\/em>\u00a0and has since starred in over 50 films and television series ranging from commercial blockbusters to art house gems. He will receive the CUT ABOVE Award from JAPAN CUTS in honor of his diverse career and especially for his work in\u00a0<em>Under the Turquoise Sky<\/em>. A remarkable international co-production from director KENTARO,\u00a0<em>Under the Turquoise Sky<\/em>\u00a0sees Yagira embark on a personal journey across the vastness of the Mongolian countryside. Both Yagira and KENTARO will make special appearances at the film\u2019s premiere screening and encore presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/615a55916dadb047431247ce\/e982e1b1-0bfb-4177-8784-eb35f3f3a0c3\/G0Xn02Gv.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>\u00a9 Ippo.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>An additional highlight is the first in-person iteration of the festival\u2019s&nbsp;Next Generation&nbsp;competition (pictured above is director Yuho Ishibashi\u2019s <em>When Morning Comes, I Feel Empty<\/em>) which offers a hand-picked selection of six independent narrative features directed by emerging directors. The festival\u2019s only juried section, Japan Society awards the&nbsp;Obayashi Prize&nbsp;to the most accomplished film as determined by a jury of industry professionals. This year\u2019s distinguished jurors are critic and essayist&nbsp;Moeko Fujii;&nbsp;Dan Sullivan, programmer at Film at Lincoln Center; and distributor&nbsp;Pearl Chan&nbsp;(Good Move Media, Kani Releasing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/615a55916dadb047431247ce\/33cc1a01-6c64-4ad4-b9e3-c41ee8cfcf61\/Z1PN0xli.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>Flashback Before Death \u00a9 Hotel des Arts, Silent Movie \u00a9 Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Film and New Media.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>JAPAN CUTS also offers two programs of&nbsp;SHORT CUTS&nbsp;which explore experimental, narrative and animated short-length films, including the directorial debut of&nbsp;Sogo (Gakuryu) Ishii&nbsp;composer&nbsp;Hiroyuki Onogawa&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Silent Movie<\/em>,&nbsp;a versatile assortment of&nbsp;benshi-narrated silent films that includes an adaptation based on the screenplay of&nbsp;Sadao Yamanaka\u2019s first film.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/615a55916dadb047431247ce\/b5259a39-e7ad-4b30-ab03-219100623e9a\/Tokyo+Melody+me%E2%80%A6Elizabeth+Lennard.jpg+.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>\u00a9<\/em><\/strong> Elizabeth Lennard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, JAPAN CUTS is proud to present the 1985 documentary&nbsp;<em>Tokyo Melody: A Film about Ryuichi Sakamoto<\/em>&nbsp;in tribute to the legendary musician, composer and groundbreaking creative whose innovations in music, film and art remain unparalleled.
