The Yomiuri Shimbun is Japan\u2019s largest daily newspaper with a circulation of over\u00a06\u00a0million copies. We are headquartered in Tokyo and have over 25\u00a0international bureaus, three of which are in the United States: Washington DC, New York and Los Angeles.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qualifications<\/strong>: Applicants must have at least a bachelor\u2019s degree. Background in US politics, international relations, foreign policy, economics, or journalism,\u00a0is preferred. Attention to accuracy and the ability\u00a0to multitask effectively under deadline is required. A strong work ethic paired with the facility to develop and maintain\u00a0good sources as well as the\u00a0ability to take direction well and work collaboratively with others is essential. Japanese language skills are preferred but not necessary.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Description<\/strong>: Main duties include assisting our Washington-based Japanese correspondents by attending video-conference,\u00a0telephonic and in-person briefings\u00a0and\u00a0press conferences; tracking relevant news stories;\u00a0arranging and conducting interviews;\u00a0composing clear and concise memos on issues of interest; and covering various events, including those held by area think tanks and\u00a0Congress. Additionally, given that 2024 will be a presidential\u00a0election\u00a0year, coverage of various presidential campaign rallies and related events will also be an important part of the reporting duties. Rapid and precise transcription is also required.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Responsibilities<\/strong>: Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to coverage of the campaign trail,\u00a0White House, State Department, Department of Defense, Department of Treasury, Commerce, USTR\u00a0and FRB. Additionally, the selected candidate may also be required to work other news areas as situation warrants. This position has no byline or article-writing opportunities at this time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applicants must be prepared to work occasional weekends and overtime once or twice during the week. Given the situation in Ukraine, there may be some more overtime than in peacetime news cycles. Some travel opportunities may present themselves. Compensation in addition to salary and overtime includes medical\/dental benefits, as well as 401(k).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
