On Nov. 17, more than 3,000 fans gathered in the Special Events Hall of the Javits Center for the East Coast premiere of \u201cWeathering with You,\u201d the latest animated film from celebrated writer\/director Makoto Shinkai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The screening served\nas the Closing Film event of the annual Anime NYC convention, which in its\nthird year drew a record 46,000 fans over three days. This hotly anticipated\nnew film from Shinkai and producer Genki Kawamura is the follow-up to their critically\nacclaimed global smash \u201cYour Name\u201d (2016), the highest-grossing Japanese film\nof the decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Produced in English\nand set for national release in January by New York\u2019s own GKIDS (who backed\nlast year\u2019s Academy Award-nominated anime film \u201cMirai\u201d), \u201cWeathering with You\u201d\nfollows high schooler Hodaka, who runs away from his remote island home to\nTokyo and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits.\nAfter befriending the bright and strong-willed Hina, Hodaka witnesses her strange\nand wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky. Together\nthe two develop a successful \u201csunshine\u201d startup, but what happens when\nmanipulating the weather leads to even greater problems?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A crowd-pleasing\nstory with elements of comedy and romance that wed the supernatural elements of\n\u201cYour Name\u201d with the more adult concerns of Shinkai\u2019s earlier work \u201cThe Garden\nof Words\u201d (2013), \u201cWeathering with You\u201d serves up unforgettable animation in\nits exquisite lensing of an unusually gloomy and rainy Tokyo. Japanese rock\nband Radwimps, also returning from \u201cYour Name,\u201d provide solid music and songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWeathering with You\u201d premieres in the New York\nmetropolitan area with dubbed and subtitled fan preview screenings Jan. 15-16.\nThe film opens nationwide Jan. 17.
