It was established by the U.S. Congress in 1994 to build a corps of U.S. federal government employees with proficiency in the Japanese language and practical, firsthand knowledge about Japan and its government.<\/p>\n<p>The Mansfield Fellowship Program includes seven weeks of language training in Ishikawa Prefecture and ten months of professional assignments in the Government of Japan.\u00a0During the one-year program, Fellows will develop an in-depth understanding of Japan\u2019s government and its policy-making process and create networks of contacts with their counterparts in the Japanese government, business, professional, and academic communities.<\/p>\n<p>These placements give Fellows unparalleled access and opportunities to learn about Japan and its government from the inside through working side-by-side with their Japanese counterparts, participating in office activities, meetings, and business travel.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Fellows may also take advantage of opportunities to work in the offices of Japanese National Diet members, non-governmental organizations, and private companies later in the Fellowship year.\u00a0\u00a0These experiences \u2013 as well as additional language training, supplemental education programs, and study tours \u2013 build the Fellows\u2019 skills, expertise and contacts and facilitate their agencies\u2019 work on Japan-related issues when they return to service in the U.S. federal government.<\/p>\n<p>Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to U.S. federal government employees with a professional interest in Japan. Successful candidates will join a diverse pool of Mansfield Fellows who currently serve in senior positions with the U.S. government.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Fellowship Components<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The one-year Fellowship Program consists of two components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seven-week homestay and language training program in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan<\/li>\n<li>Ten months of placements in the government of Japan and other organizations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During the program, Fellows are offered living allowances and other educational support benefits<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fellows must be federal employees with at least two consecutive years of federal government service by, and immediately preceding,\u00a0July 1, 2019<\/li>\n<li>Fellows must obtain the authorization of an agency official before applying<\/li>\n<li>Fellows from the executive branch of government (Agency-funded) must be detailed by their home agency to the Foundation for the full duration of the fellowship year from\u00a0July 1, 2019 \u2013 June 30, 2020.
