Isle of Dogs<\/i><\/a><\/span> is director Wes Anderson<\/span><\/a>\u2019s first animated film since 2009\u2019s Fantastic Mr. Fox<\/i><\/span><\/a>. While it has received mostly positive reviews<\/span><\/a> (with some reservations<\/span><\/a>), it\u2019s still interesting to see Anderson hone his storytelling skills using a colorful and vibrant world created with stop motion animation. The story opens with a prologue titled \u201cBefore the Age of Obedience\u201d that supposedly explains how cats became more prominent in Japan. Fast forwarding to \u201cJapan 20 Years in the Future,\u201d the movie cuts to fictional Megasaki City, its residents, and Mayor Kobayashi (Kunichi Nomura<\/span><\/a>), an authoritarian who declares that all dogs must be banished to nearby Trash Island because of the outbreak of dog flu and snout fever. The first dog that arrives on Trash Island is Spots (Liev Schreiber<\/span><\/a>), the personal guard dog of Atari Kobayashi (Koyu Rankin<\/span><\/a>), the ward and orphaned nephew of the mayor.<\/p>\n

Atari soon takes matters into his own hands and flies a propeller plane to Trash Island to find Spots. He unfortunately crash lands on the island (in the meantime getting a piece of the plane stuck in his head, ouch) but is rescued by a pack of five dogs: Chief (Bryan Cranston<\/span><\/a>), Boss (Bill Murray<\/span><\/a>), Rex (Edward Norton<\/span><\/a>), Duke (Jeff Goldblum<\/span><\/a>), and King (Bob Balaban<\/span><\/a>). The dogs\u2014except for Chief, who was a former stray\u2014agree to help Atari find Spots and accompany him on his journey to another part of Trash Island.<\/p>\n

Though reluctant at first, Chief decides to join Atari and the other dogs after getting some extra persuasion from Nutmeg (Scarlett Johansson<\/span><\/a>), a female purebred dog. Back in Megasaki City, Mayor Kobayashi orders the extermination of all dogs on Trash Island. Tracy Walker (Greta Gerwig<\/span><\/a>), an American exchange student, gets involved and investigates further.<\/p>\n

A couple fun Easter eggs in the film include: Ken Watanabe<\/span><\/a> (The Last Samurai, Inception<\/i>) as a head surgeon, Yojiro Noda<\/span><\/a> (lead singer of RADWIMPS) as a news anchor, and Yoko Ono<\/span><\/a> (artist, singer, peace activist) as a medical assistant named\u2026Yoko Ono.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

At its core this movie doesn\u2019t stray (pun intended) from Wes Anderson\u2019s usual style of narrative: quirky characters, quick dialogue, and quilted settings. Anderson paints a colorful, vibrant world using aspects of stop motion animation to bring a scratchy and ruff (pun intended) aesthetic to a movie that involves a lot of stray dogs and trash. Notably, the dogs\u2019 fur has so much texture that you can almost see yourself petting these canines through the movie screen. Fun fact: the illustrators animated every other frame<\/span><\/a> (instead of every frame), which was what added the extra \u201ctexture\u201d to the characters and settings.<\/p>\n

At the very surface, Isle of Dogs<\/i> is a fun, heart-warming tale about a boy and his dog reuniting, and the journey they experience together. Who doesn\u2019t love that? Through another lens, one could view this movie as an allegory on disenfranchisement and being the outsider. There are various outsiders in this movie: Chief as a stray, Atari as an orphan, dogs as a group of animals, and Mayor Kobayashi\u2019s seemingly arbitrary dislike of dogs are among them. In the end, everything works out and all groups come together.<\/p>\n

Isle of Dogs<\/i> is not without some ruff (not missing out on pun chances!) patches. Noticeably, the movie has some very convenient assumptions and plot devices it employs to allow Anderson to wrap up everything in a neat bow at the end. This leads to a lot of follow-up questions about how certain events happened (a character\u2019s instant technical wizardry? A sudden change of heart at the end?).<\/p>\n

In addition, there was a noticeable lack of female main characters (both canine and human) with Atari\u2019s main doggy bunch all male-dominated. Except for a minor role from Johansson, Interpreter Nelson (Frances McDormand<\/span><\/a>), Yoko Ono, and Tracy, there were a lot of Y chromosomes here.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Tracy, the film could have done a better job of incorporating another character into the Atari\/dogs vs. Mayor Kobayashi relationship. Some of the principal complaints about Isle of Dogs<\/i> involved Tracy\u2019s depiction as a \u201cwhite savior.\u201d While this may have not been intentional by Anderson, it is generally not a good look, especially when Atari falls in love with her after meeting her (thus perpetuating the \u201cexotic foreigner\u201d image). There are other characters who can play Tracy\u2019s role without being white and from the States\u2014especially if this movie is set two decades in the future.<\/p>\n

There was also the language barrier. From the beginning, the audience is told that all dog speak has been translated to English. Great, very convenient for a movie intended primarily for an English-speaking audience. Pretty much none of the Japanese dialogue is translated via subtitles (except for a few lines at the end), and only periodically through Interpreter Nelson. Okay, cool. The non-translated Japanese is a nice example of how much one can understand even if they can\u2019t grasp the language with visuals and context, and the non-translated lines don\u2019t take away from the movie.<\/p>\n

However, if the entire movie has been translated from dog speak to English, this should hold true for all human languages, even the American English spoken by Tracy. From the dogs\u2019 point of view, all non-canine language cannot be understood and since the audience is listening to the movie through the ears of dogs, they should not be able to understand Tracy either despite her being a native English speaker. In addition, Tracy speaks only English to Japanese people and is (apparently) understood.<\/p>\n

Most likely, Anderson just wanted to make things easier for the audience. However, to some effect this marginalizes the Japanese characters because they are the only ones who need translators. This seems a little odd as this language barrier makes the Japanese residents the outsiders despite the movie being set in Japan.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Anderson does a suitable job of balancing his storytelling style while incorporating and respecting Japanese culture. To his credit, he even had Nomura (the voice of Mayor Kobayashi) join his team as a co-writer<\/span><\/a> to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of Japanese culture depicted in the film. Isle of Dogs<\/i> is a fun film and a stylistic ode<\/span><\/a> to legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa<\/span><\/a> about a boy and man\u2019s best friend that\u2019s full of beautiful visuals and is equally enjoyable for both kids and adults.<\/p>\n
