Our programs provide high school students with the opportunity to connect deeply and engage meaningfully with the richness and complexities of another country through hands-on experiences in local communities and through the lens of a specific program theme.

Each program has two adult co-leaders who work together to guide a group of 10 to 15 high school students on a 4-week journey. Our Leaders are our most critical on-the-ground resource, traveling alongside the group and serving as the students’ primary support throughout the program. Leaders take on a wide range of responsibilities, including helping students integrate into local cultures and host families, conducting group excursions, and guiding students through discussions of and reflections on their experiences. Leaders work closely with The Experiment’s US-based staff and in-country partners to maximize students’ health and safety and to ensure the program is meaningful, challenging, and experientially rich.

Ongoing Support from Program Start to Finish

Experimenters are met by their two group leaders at a specific meeting location in the designated departure airport in the US. Group leaders immediately start engaging students in conversations and ice-breaker activities. Right away – and continuing throughout the in-country orientation – leaders work with Experimenters to increase their knowledge of the host country and culture, develop communication skills, and cultivate new attitudes and awareness. During the course of the program, leaders keep in close contact with homestay families, conduct group excursions, and guide students through discussions of and reflections on their experiences. At the end of the program, leaders help students synthesize their experiences and assist them in considering how they can integrate what they learned about themselves and the world into their lives moving forward.

Commitment to Diversity

The Experiment is committed to recruiting and supporting students of diverse backgrounds, and thus The Experiment is equally committed to hiring Group Leaders who represent diverse geographic, ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds.

Benefits

Leaders benefit from an intensive weeklong professional development training, the chance to experience a familiar culture from a new perspective, and an opportunity to use your language skills and expand your professional network. The Experiment covers leaders’ program-related travel expenses, including domestic travel to the Leader Training Week in Vermont and then home after the program; meals and lodging during the Leader Training Week; international flights to and from the program country; and transportation, lodging, meals, emergency travel medical insurance, communication, and incidentals while on the program. In addition, leaders receive a stipend based on program length.

Learn more about The Experiment’s mission, history, and programs at http://www.experiment.org.

Learn more about Japan programs here:

https://www.experiment.org/program/japan-japanimation-anime-manga/

https://www.experiment.org/program/japan-japanese-language-cultural-discovery/

Find more leader-specific info at https://www.experiment.org/apply/become-a-group-leader/ – including leader responsibilities, hiring timeline, application checklist, and FAQs.

Qualifications

Our Leaders

Are professional, flexible, resilient, resourceful, and pro-active

Genuinely enjoy spending time with high school students

Have strong organizational and logistical skills, and are able to manage a budget

Are willing to put their students’ learning and development ahead of their own experience

Are ready for an intense, challenging, and rewarding summer

Come from a wide variety of backgrounds

Are, above all, educators and facilitators

Minimum Required Qualifications

Experience working with high school students in a leadership capacity

In-depth experience studying, working, or living in one or more of the regions in which The Experiment operates

For Japan programs, fluent Japanese skills are required

At least 21 years of age (Applicants must be 21 or older by June 1, 2018.)

A bachelor’s degree (Current undergraduates may apply if they are on track to obtain their bachelor’s degree by June 15, 2018.)

Ability to pass a criminal background check

Eligibility to work in the United States

A current passport (valid through January 2019)

CPR / first aid certification (The Experiment provides all hired leaders with a $90 certification stipend that can be used toward CPR / first aid certification.
