By<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Preston<\/em><\/strong> Hatfield<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(<\/em><\/strong>Yamanashi<\/em><\/strong>–<\/em><\/strong>ken<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, 2009-10) <\/em><\/strong>for<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>JQ<\/strong> magazine<\/strong><\/a>. <\/em><\/strong>Preston<\/em><\/strong> received<\/em><\/strong> a<\/em><\/strong> BA<\/em><\/strong> in<\/em><\/strong> English<\/em><\/strong> literature<\/em><\/strong> with<\/em><\/strong> an<\/em><\/strong> emphasis<\/em><\/strong> in<\/em><\/strong> creative<\/em><\/strong> writing<\/em><\/strong> and<\/em><\/strong> a<\/em><\/strong> minor<\/em><\/strong> in<\/em><\/strong> Japanese<\/em><\/strong> at<\/em><\/strong> the<\/em><\/strong> University<\/em><\/strong> of<\/em><\/strong> California<\/em><\/strong>, <\/em><\/strong>Davis<\/em><\/strong>. <\/em><\/strong>After<\/em><\/strong> spending<\/em><\/strong> an<\/em><\/strong> amazing<\/em><\/strong> year<\/em><\/strong> on<\/em><\/strong> JET<\/em><\/strong> in<\/em><\/strong> Yamanashi<\/em><\/strong>, <\/em><\/strong>he<\/em><\/strong> spent<\/em><\/strong> a<\/em><\/strong> year<\/em><\/strong> writing<\/em><\/strong> and<\/em><\/strong> interning<\/em><\/strong> with<\/em><\/strong> book<\/em><\/strong> publishing<\/em><\/strong> companies<\/em><\/strong> in<\/em><\/strong> New<\/em><\/strong> York<\/em><\/strong>. <\/em><\/strong>He<\/em><\/strong> currently<\/em><\/strong> lives<\/em><\/strong> in Cupertino<\/em><\/strong>, <\/em><\/strong>where<\/em><\/strong> he continues<\/em><\/strong> to<\/em><\/strong> cover<\/em><\/strong> local<\/em><\/strong> Japan<\/em><\/strong>–<\/em><\/strong>related<\/em><\/strong> stories<\/em><\/strong> for<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>JQ<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This season, Vertical Comics<\/a> releases two notable titles. The first is She<\/em> and<\/em> Her<\/em> Cat<\/em><\/a>, a story by acclaimed animator Makoto Shinkai, the mastermind behind 5 <\/em>Centimeters<\/em> Per<\/em> Second<\/em> and Your<\/em> Name<\/em>.<\/em> The second is Mobile<\/em> Suit<\/em> Gundam Wing<\/em>: <\/em>Endless<\/em> Waltz \u2014<\/em> Glory<\/em> of<\/em> the<\/em> Losers<\/em><\/a>, a multi-volume adventure starring everyone\u2019s favorite fighting mecha. While very different in style, pacing, and subject matter, each title has a lot to offer its readers.<\/p>\n

In She<\/em> and<\/em> Her<\/em> Cat<\/em>, Shinkai does what he does best, using carefully curated imagery to set a somber tone that soothes readers into a quiet, meditative headspace. From there he proceeds to unfold an understated vignette that explores adult depression. This is a timely story, our considering society\u2019s gradual willingness to speak openly about depression and mental health more broadly.<\/p>\n

Shinkai\u2019s protagonist, Miyu, is a sympathetic introvert who has a hard time asking for or accepting help from others, and she is also her own antagonist, a fact that will likely resonate with readers who have battled depression. One unique feature about this story, which is also at times strained, is that it is told from the perspective of the protagonist\u2019s cat, Chobi. While some readers may feel that Shinkai could have done more with this story, it is nonetheless well told and tactfully, intelligently handled.<\/p>\n

By contrast, Glory<\/em> of<\/em> the<\/em> Losers<\/em> delivers action, explosions, and braggadocio. Based on creator Yoshiyuki Tomino\u2019s classic 1970s giant robot series, the story follows a common trope: In a post-apocalyptic world, humans have broken off into different factions to colonize other planets. But when a central military agency begins annexing free colonies, a small resistance rises in the name of freedom to end their tyranny. This is an enjoyable underdog story that may have particular appeal to middle and high school students.<\/p>\n
