She starts her day by watching <\/strong><\/em><em><strong>Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she shares some of the interesting tidbits and trends along with h<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>er<\/strong><\/em><em><strong> own observations.<a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2017\/05\/02\/the-departure\/departurepremiere2017tribecafilmfestival8ssfzdtji2yl\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41340\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-41340\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DeparturePremiere2017TribecaFilmFestival8SSFZdtJi2yl-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last month&#8217;s Tribeca Film Festival featured the world premiere of the documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/tribecafilm.com\/filmguide\/departure-2017\">The Departure<\/a> directed by Lana Wilson.\u00a0 It profiles Ittetsu Nemoto, a Buddhist priest whose lifework is suicide prevention.\u00a0 In the group sessions he holds at his temple, he introduces exercises that attempt to show attendees what ending their lives would really mean in terms of loss and even simulates the experience of dying.\u00a0 Many participants come away with a renewed lease on life, and for those who don&#8217;t Nemoto makes himself available to them day and night whenever they need someone to talk to.<\/p>\n<p>However, Nemoto&#8217;s devoted around-the-clock counseling takes its toll on him, both<!--more--> emotionally in his shouldering these countless stories of grief, and physically as he is suffering from heart disease and trying to stay healthy for his wife and young son.\u00a0 The film reveals how Nemoto&#8217;s own life was touched by suicide in the past, as both his uncle and two high school friends took their own lives.\u00a0 Nemoto and his family were on hand for the final screening of the film, after which I interpreted for him during the Q&amp;A.\u00a0 Although Wilson doesn&#8217;t speak Japanese, both she and Nemoto said this contributed to a more relaxed shooting atmosphere, as participants felt comfortable sharing more than they would have if they were being completely understood.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WIT Life is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
