The Museum of the City of New York is recruiting multi-lingual Ph.D. candidates, post-doctoral researchers, and early-career academics interested in gaining experience in public history to provide tours as Museum Scholars to visiting groups including college\/university students, foreign tourists, seniors, professional organizations, and alumni associations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Museum is pleased to offer a roster of interactive, guided tours as a key component in a new initiative in adult education. Tour offerings will include highlights of the Museum’s current exhibitions, as well as in-depth experiences of singular exhibitions including the\u00a0New York at Its Core<\/em>. Tours typically last between 60 and 90 <\/span>minutes, and are primarily offered during regular museum hours: 10:00am \u2013 6:00pm<\/span><\/span>, seven days a week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ideal candidates will have excellent public speaking skills, an interest in understanding and relating history <\/span>though artifacts and images, an ability to synthesize and communicate new information from the Museum’s rotating schedule of exhibitions, and fluency in one of the following languages: Spanish, Mandarin, French, Japanese, Italian, or Portuguese. Though an appreciation of New York City history is essential, candidates from a range of academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trainings will take place around new exhibition openings to prepare Museum Scholars for guiding groups. In anticipation of\u00a0New York at Its Core<\/em>, there will also be a special training series through September and October for Museum Scholars alongside Museum Educators with the Frederick A.O. Schwarz Children’s Center.<\/span><\/p>\n

Expectations:<\/strong>\u00a0Guides are expected to be available to lead tours one day a week and one weekend per month. Hours are not guaranteed and are based on booking requests. Guides are also expected to attend <\/span>trainings or if unable to review material on their own.<\/span><\/p>\n

Compensation:\u00a0<\/strong>Guides will be paid a flat rate of $75 per <\/span>tour, and a separate hourly training rate.<\/span><\/p>\n
