The jurisdiction of the Consulate is Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">As part of its mission to promote exchange and best understand the politics of the Southeastern region, the Consulate is seeking a Political Advisor.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The position is based in Atlanta (the Lenox area of Buckhead) and operates from\u00a09a.m. to 5p.m.Monday\u00a0through\u00a0Friday, though occasional paid overtime may be required on nights and weekends. In addition to the salary that comes with the position, the Consulate offers healthcare coverage and generous vacation and sick leave. The Consulate is also closed for an average of 14 paid holidays each year.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #000000\">Candidate must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S. green card holder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Please note that Japanese language skills are not required for this position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Responsibilities<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The functions of the Political Advisor include (though are not limited to) the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Advocate for the Government of Japan and its interests in the Southeast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Advise Consulate staff on how the Government of Japan can best understand and navigate the political landscape of the South.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Research political news and trends, elections, and legislation in the Southeast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">At times represent the Government of Japan at official Consulate functions or events attended by Consulate staff.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Build and maintain partnerships with local, state, and national political actors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Write speeches and occasional correspondence for senior diplomatic staff; occasionally proofread additional speeches and correspondence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Occasionally organize or assist with special events put on by the Consulate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Skills<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Political Science, Economics, International Affairs, Asian Studies, or any other field related to the politics of the Southeast and\/or Japan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Good understanding of the political landscape of the Southeast (Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, in English.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">An understanding of Japan\u2019s position in the international system, the country\u2019s politics (as they relate to international affairs), and the alliance between Japan and the United States.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Desirable skills, but not required<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">An advanced degree in one of the aforementioned fields.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">An understanding of Japanese culture and customs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Experience in a multicultural work environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Experience living and working in Japan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Experience working with or researching U.S. policy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Japanese language skills are a plus, but not required.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The expected start date for the position is\u00a0January 4, 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Interested applicants should send a cover letter and resume to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"mailto:seimu@aa.mofa.go.jp\">seimu@aa.mofa.go.jp<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\">by <strong>November 14, 2016<\/strong>.
