Each spring during the cherry blossom season, Japan-America Society of Washington DC (JASW) produces the largest one day Japanese street festival in America, and it is here in the Nation\u2019s Capital! \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
This coming year the festival will be held on\u00a0Saturday, April 16<\/span><\/span>\u00a0from\u00a010:30 to 6:00 pm<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in the Capitol Riverfront Neighborhood in SE DC (Navy Yard Metro Station).\u00a0 Each year, it takes about 65 Sakura Matsuri Committee members and over 600 volunteers to put on this huge event.\u00a0The festival is not only the celebration of the gift of the cherry trees in 1912, but also JASW\u2019s largest outreach program to educate Washingtonians about Japanese culture.\u00a0 For the last couple of years we have been able to reach around 45,000 people, and show the richness of Japan and its culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
The Sakura Matsuri Committee is divided up into 18 different sub-committees which\u00a0are led by Chairs and Sub-chairs.\u00a0 Each year, JASW is very lucky to have a strong core of committee members who come back year after year.\u00a0 However, there are always a couple of spots we need to fill. \u00a0We understand that many of our Sakura Matsuri Committee members work, go to school or live in other cities, and may not be able to come to all the meetings.\u00a0 In that case, each committee and its members should be in contact by e-mail or phone talking about committee responsibilities. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Our first meeting is on\u00a0Friday, December 4<\/span><\/span>\u00a0at JASW from\u00a06:30<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0 The following meeting will be a team building meeting on Sunday, January 10 from\u00a012:00 to 4:00 pm<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0 The team building meeting is designed for all the committees to meet and get to know each other.\u00a0 We do exercises that help us prepare for the festival, more experienced committee members will discuss their experiences with Sakura Matsuri, and have a good time with people all working for the same goal, putting on the best Japanese street festival in the country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

On the day of the festival the Chairs and Sub-chairs are asked to arrive at\u00a04:30 am<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to help unload the truck, and organize their committee boxes or equipment.\u00a0 Sometimes, it feels like there is never enough time!<\/span><\/div>\n

  6. Volunteer Orientation at JASW; tentatively scheduled for\u00a0March 21 thru April 1<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Last Meeting,\u00a0Wednesday, April 13<\/span><\/span>\u00a0at JASW from\u00a06:30pm<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

    Orientations for day-of volunteers will be at the end of March and beginning of April.\u00a0\u00a0The Beer Garden\u2019s orientation is mandatory for everyone!<\/b>\u00a0 For the Alcohol Committee orientations, a representative from DC\u2019s ABRA comes out and lectures us on ID checking and JASW goes line by line for our management plan for the gardens.\u00a0 We will offer 4 Beer Garden Orientations for volunteers to join.<\/span><\/div>\n
