Overview:\u00a0<\/strong>CET Jordan consists of the Intensive Arabic Language and Middle East Studies & Internship programs\u00a0which operate during the spring, summer, and fall terms. Enrollment is between 15 and 25 students per\u00a0term. Jordan-Language is designed for intermediate and advanced Arabic language students and Jordan-Internship is open to complete beginners.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Jordan Resident Assistant (RA) is a part-time position. The RA has the opportunity to study Arabic with\u00a0a private tutor while performing his\/her duties for CET.\u00a0The Jordan team includes the RA who reports directly to the Resident Director (RD); the RD, who manages\u00a0all non-academic aspects of the program, such as housing, roommates, activities and budget; and the\u00a0Academic Director (AD), who oversees the language program by managing the language faculty, adjusting \u00a0curriculum and maintaining overall academic quality. The RA works closely with both teammates,\u00a0particularly the RD, to ensure that all student needs are met promptly and effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of the opportunity to attend Arabic language classes and conduct personal research given\u00a0Jordan\u2019s increasing importance in the region, this is an excellent position for a graduate student. The ideal\u00a0candidate will be able to balance his\/her own studies with the part-time RA duties, host visitors with poise,\u00a0and competently handle all on-site emergencies. Candidates must be native-English speakers with\u00a0excellent Arabic skills. The successful candidate will attend a two-day training session in DC before\u00a0departure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Candidates must be willing to sign at least a one-year contract with CET. Longer contracts are preferred.<\/span><\/p>\n

CET Academic Programs is a study abroad organization based in Washington, DC that has been designing\u00a0and administering innovative educational programs abroad since 1982. Originally \u201cChina Educational Tours,\u201d\u00a0CET began operations in Beijing, later expanding to other cities in China and then to other countries around\u00a0the world. Today, CET offers semester and summer study abroad programs in Brazil, China, the Czech\u00a0Republic, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Tunisia and Vietnam, as well as short-term, customized programs worldwide.\u00a0CET is known for high academic standards, innovative approaches to teaching and careful student\u00a0management. CET programs integrate students into their overseas communities and lead them to create\u00a0lasting relationships with their local hosts. CET is the only US provider to house its students with local\u00a0roommates in each of its locations. As an environmentally conscientious organization, CET adopts locally\u00a0appropriate measures in its centers worldwide to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to sustainable\u00a0practices wherever possible. Staffed by over 50 full-time employees in the United States and overseas, CET\u00a0currently sends around 1100 US students abroad annually.<\/span><\/p>\n

Responsibilities:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Support Staff<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Support the AD and RD in upholding all CET policies, including the full-time language pledge<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Participate in the RD-designed orientation sessions each term and assist RD with arrival and\u00a0housing logistics<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Assist the RD and AD with minor tasks, such as interpreting, and translating and editing English\u00a0documents, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Assist the RD with activities, trips and workshops<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Teach\/Counsel<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Serve as language and culture resource to students<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Assist students as they adjust to life in\u00a0Jordan, particularly in the first week after arrival<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Serve as Liaison<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      • Represent CET alongside the AD and RD to all US faculty visitors and interpret as necessary<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Assist the RD in managing on-site crises in an appropriate and effective manner<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Communicate with CET’s DC office in coordination with the AD and RD, particularly in the event of\u00a0an on-site emergency<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Requirements (in order of priority):<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        • BA in Middle East Studies, Arabic Studies or related field<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Native English<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Near fluency in Levantine Arabic; excellent Arabic reading\/writing skills<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Study abroad experience in Jordan; CET program alumni are particularly encouraged to apply<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Superior interpersonal skills<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Ability to handle emergencies with authority and calm<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Excellent oral communication and writing skills<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Willingness to wear different hats and sacrifice personal time<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Commitment to education and the field of Arabic language acquisition<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Sensitivity to both student needs and cultural differences<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Undergraduate teaching or advising experience (preferred)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
